Mother and son give back to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital

La Grange – At age 16, Patrick Wallace began working in the cafeteria at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. That job led to a full-fledged career and an opportunity to make an even greater impact.

Wallace, 53, has recently been appointed to the La Grange Memorial Foundation Board of Directors. Wallace is one of four new members joining the board in 2011, along with Thomas Caplis, William Kunkel, and the hospital’s new vice president/chief financial officer, Keith Richardson.

“Back then I never envisioned that seven years of washing dishes and pots and pans throughout high school and college would lead me to a life-long career in the hospitality industry and provide me with the stepping stones to advance me to where I am today,” said Wallace.

As fate would have it, after his college graduation Wallace was hired by Sodexo, USA which provides cafeteria and patient feeding in thousands of hospitals throughout the country as well as world-wide. He has worked for Sodexo for 30 years and has been a district manager since 1990. He served for 23 years with the Corporate Services division at such locations as Kraft World Headquarters, Argonne National Laboratory, Museum of Science and Industry and the John G. Shedd Aquarium and has held numerous other leadership positions within the Sodexo organization.

Wallace was introduced to the healthcare field by his mother, Gene Wallace, who worked as a nurse at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital for 27 years, the last 14 years as the assistant director of nursing as a night supervisor in the hospital. She retired in 1989 and for the last 17 years has volunteered at the hospital, working mainly in the surgical lounge and at the front desk and reception area.

Now 86, Gene takes pride that her son is continuing her legacy. “My volunteer work has allowed me to keep up-to-date with the hospital and the improvements in nursing,” said Gene. “I am proud that my son has taken that same interest.”

Patrick Wallace said, “I want to increase the awareness of potential corporate partners for the La Grange Memorial Hospital Foundation. The hospital is doing great work in following its mission and needs our support.”

The foundation supports the mission of Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital through philanthropy.

“Patrick shares the same enthusiasm for the hospital as his mother,” said Rick Wright, Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital’s chief executive officer. “We’re fortunate to have volunteers and foundation board members like the Wallaces, who help support our mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ.”

Wallace received a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Management from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. He currently resides in Lisle, with his wife, Sue, and their three children. Wallace enjoys spending time with his family, golfing and fishing.
