Birck family $1 million gift helping to transform Adventist Hinsdale Hospital

Hinsdale – Michael J. Birck, founder of Tellabs, Inc., along with his wife, Katherine, made a $1 million lead gift to the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation for Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s patient pavilion. This magnanimous donation is one of the largest single-gift contributions ever received by the foundation.

“We’re proud to be able to help Adventist Hinsdale Hospital usher in a new era of transforming care,” Michael Birck said. “The hospital is a valuable resource that will serve our community’s needs for years to come.”

Currently under construction and scheduled to open in early 2012, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s new patient pavilion will consist of 290 private patient suites and will feature many home-like amenities. Other improvements include newly-designed patient units that bring caregivers closer to the bedside with ultra-modern workstations, and improve patient privacy with patient-only corridors. There will be a new critical care unit and surgical services department, plus a bright and spacious lobby and a new chapel. A second phase of the project is a proposed cancer and outpatient center to be located on Ogden Avenue in Hinsdale. This center will serve patients of Adventist Hinsdale and Adventist La Grange Memorial hospitals.

The goal of the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation’s “Your Family, Your Health, Our Commitment” capital campaign is to raise $22 million for the patient pavilion and outpatient center.

“The Birck family’s generous gift will go a long way toward making these much-needed improvements to our facility,” said Susan King, executive director of the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation. “We’re grateful for their support.”

This is the Bircks’ second $1 million contribution to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital; the first was made when Michael Birck served as chairman of the campaign to renovate the Womens and Children’s Center. The Center was named “The Birck Family Women’s and Children’s Center” in honor of the family’s contributions of both time and resources. Michael Birck also is a former member of Adventist Midwest Health Operating Board. In 2004, the Bircks received the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation’s Centennial Medallions for community leadership.

David L. Crane, president/chief executive officer of Adventist Midwest Health, called this gift “an investment in our future.”

“It will make a meaningful difference in countless lives that will be served in our new facility for years to come,” Crane said.

Michael Birck currently serves as chairman of Naperville-based Tellabs, Inc. He is a highly recognized leader in the telecommunications industry who has received a number of honors. Katherine Birck is the former head of nursing at Women’s Health Care of Hinsdale, and serves on the board of King-Bruwaert House retirement home in Burr Ridge.

The Bircks support many educational, health, and charitable organizations through their volunteerism and philanthropic giving. For many years Michael Birck had been active with the United Way and has been credited with significantly contributing to its growth in DuPage County. He also serves as a director of Molex, Inc. and the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Purdue University. The Bircks have received honorary doctors of humane letters from both Loyola University Chicago and Benedictine University in Lisle. Michael was awarded an honorary doctorate of engineering from his alma mater, Purdue University, and was also named an outstanding alumnus.
