Adventist Paulson Pediatric Rehab hosts speech, hearing screening May 15
Hinsdale – Adventist Paulson Pediatric Rehabilitation Center will host a free speech and hearing screening and ear examination for children on May 15.

Paulson Pediatric is running the screening in honor of Better Hearing and Speech Month, which takes place in May. The screenings and examinations are available from 1 to 4:30 p.m. May 15 at 12 Salt Creek Lane, Suite 106 and can be scheduled by calling (630) 856-7525.

The screenings, which take between 10 and 15 minutes each, can help to detect hearing loss. They are available for children ranging in age from 1 to 16 years old, and will be administered by speech and language pathologist Jennifer Gusentine, MHS, CCC-SLP; audiologist Dr. Melinda M. Oij; and pediatric otolaryngologist Dr. Eileen Mahoney.

An Adventist Health Partners doctor, Mahoney will host the event at her Hinsdale office.

“We’re happy to see school-aged children and adolescents,” Mahoney said. “If there are concerns, we want to screen them. The whole family can come.”

Hearing issues that remain untreated in young children can result in problems with speech development and delays in school, Oij said.

“That’s why it’s so important that we catch it early,” Oij said. “If we need to do anything, we can do it right away.”

Even in older children, hearing issues can result in problems. People might fill in the blanks during the normal flow of a conversation if they can’t understand a few words, Mahoney said, but when it comes to hearing specifics to solve problems in a classroom, an adolescent will have a more difficult time getting by.

If any issues are discovered during the screening process, Oij said they will recommend parents return for a full appointment and test at another time. The hearing screening will involve a child responding to noises played in each ear. The speech screening involves children repeating back a list of words.
