GlenOaks – When an announcement went out at Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream about the Adventist GlenOaks Hospital’s Pink Ribbon Art Contest, Rosemary Orbegoso of Glen Ellyn knew she had to get involved.
Although her colored pencil entry, “Pat, a Survivor,” won first place at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital’s Sept. 29 Breast Cancer Awareness Lighting Ceremony, a message of hope and new life, not winning, was Orbegoso’s reason for entering.
“My neighbor is the success story people that are recently diagnosed need to see,” Orbegoso, a special education teacher and yearbook advisor, said.
Last year, Orbegoso did not see much of her neighbor, “Pat.” She later learned Pat had been fighting breast cancer and felt terrible she had not lent support. When Orbegoso finally did see Pat, her neighbor’s appearance stunned her.
“She had been to hell and back, but she was prettier than ever,” Orbegoso said. “I wanted people to know how she overcame breast cancer and blossomed again.
Pat was thrilled when Orbegoso, an hobbyist oil painter, colored pencil artist and photographer, asked to draw her. So Orbegoso snapped about 50 pictures of Pat and her German Shepherd sitting on the front lawn. She then spent 2 ½ hours on the drawing.
Although Orbegoso prefers oils to colored pencil—since the colors in oils won’t fade over time--the latter medium was perfect for this picture since the contest had an approaching deadline.
Creating, “Pat, a Survivor,” was cathartic for Orbegoso, too. Her husband died of lung cancer. Orbegoso had cared for him at home.
“People feel a lot of fear when they’re diagnosed with cancer,” Orbegoso said. I just wanted to let them know they can make it.”
