Adventist Midwest Health's pastoral care staff will bless the hands of nurses, doctors and other health care workers at hospitals and other healthcare facilities in “Blessing of the Hands” ceremonies May 5, 6 and 7. Members of the media are invited to cover the events.
“Blessing of the Hands serves as an affirmation of the healing power of Christ as expressed through our nurses, doctors and other caregivers,” said John Rapp, regional vice president of ministries and mission at Adventist Midwest Health. “We anoint their hands, the channels through which God’s healing flows, with oil because oil in the Bible represents the healing presence of God and the work of the Holy Spirit.”
Blessing of the Hands is an annual event that has occurred for at least 12 years at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, but this is the first time the event also will be held at the new Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, which opened in January. It also will take place at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, Adventist St. Thomas Hospice, and the Paulson Willowbrook and Pediatrics facilities.
Caregivers are given cards that express prayers for compassion, understanding, and strength: “Give to me, Lord, strength for this selfless service and enable me to give hope to those I am called to serve.”
