Hinsdale – Adventist Midwest Health has named Thomas Schoenig its new regional chief information officer.
With more than 20 years in health care information systems leadership, Schoenig joined the organization on April 15 after having served as chief information officer for a community hospital in Casper, Wyo.
“Tom led an aggressive clinical information systems replacement initiative in Casper,” said Ronald Wehtje, regional chief financial officer with Adventist Midwest Health.
The Adventist Health System has an outstanding reputation within the industry, Schoenig said. He is honored and excited to join an organization strategically implementing technology to improve operational, clinical and financial performance.
“Being a faith-based organization, with its mission of Christ at the forefront of serving our communities, that’s an organizational calling that I wanted to be affiliated with,” Schoenig said.
Schoenig was born in Chicago and grew up in the McHenry area, so coming to Adventist Midwest Health is also a chance for him to be closer to family.
Previous to his time in Casper, Schoenig was system director of information systems for a five-hospital system in Las Vegas, Nev.
“While in Las Vegas, Tom focused on modernizing his hospital system’s technology infrastructure, putting in place best practices around customer service, help desk operations and information systems operational procedures,” Wehtje said.
Schoenig has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Monmouth College. He discovered computer systems while in college, working to interface a desktop computer with a chemistry lab instrument. At the time, he said, desktop computing was still in its infancy.
“I enjoyed the challenge of working with the computer,” he said. Upon graduation, he took an information technology job in the insurance industry. He started working in health care in 1988 and will celebrate his 25th anniversary in the industry this September.
Schoenig belongs to the American College of Healthcare Executives and also has membership with the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. He and his wife Abbey have two daughters, and the family is looking to relocate to the Naperville area.
