Hinsdale – With the start of demolition work, construction of the new Adventist Cancer Institute and Outpatient Center has begun.

Scheduled for completion in 2015, the center will house oncology services from both Adventist Hinsdale and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospitals, as well as imaging services, including all general imaging and women-focused imaging services, such as mammography. Certified physicians from both hospitals will provide services to patients at the facility.

“With the technological offerings and design amenities we have planned, this new center will care for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of all our patients,” said Michael J. Goebel, chief executive officer with Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “We want to continue to transform the lives of our patients, and this new center will help us do just that in a beautiful new environment.”

At a cost of about $48 million dollars, the 54,000-square-foot facility will include 19 private treatment rooms equipped with entertainment centers and high-tech comforts to help patients stay connected with home and work.

Patients will also have a chance to reflect on the center’s natural surroundings thanks to large windows in their room. Soft colors, finishes and furnishings as well as natural images will be designed to promote patient comfort and peace. For patients who desire a more social atmosphere while seeking treatment, there will be five open patient bays available.

The center will include 21 examination rooms, where patients can visit with their doctor or consult with a surgical oncologist. It will house two linear accelerators, designed to target cancer tumors while minimizing radiation exposure to healthy skin.

“By housing all of our cancer outpatient services in one convenient location, we are striving to reduce stress on our patients, an important element to their overall treatment,” said Lary Davis, chief executive officer at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. “Rather than asking patients to travel to different sites through the course of their treatment, we’ll provide all they’ll need in this central location.”

Center visitors will be greeted by journey guides, who will assist them during their visit. Rather than waiting rooms, visitors will have the chance to visit an entertainment center, gift shop, café, library or chapel for prayer and reflection.

While construction is just beginning, other work has also begun to support the new center. Both the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation as well as the La Grange Memorial Hospital Foundation have started raising money to support the new facility.

“The vision for the Adventist Cancer Institute can only come to fruition with the help of both of our communities,” said Brett Skeen, executive director with the La Grange Memorial Hospital Foundation. “There has been a great deal of support expressed for this center, which will touch the lives of many people throughout this region, but there’s still a lot of work left to be done.”

Those interested in supporting the Adventist Cancer Institute and Outpatient Center can do so by contacting either the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation at (630) 856-2008, or the La Grange Memorial Hospital Foundation at (708) 245-2902.
