Hinsdale – Burr Ridge resident Kathryn Brackett was named Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s volunteer of the month for June. The 95-year-old has volunteered at the hospital for 30 years, embroidering, sewing, stuffing and packaging pillows for the pediatric unit.
She and the other “sewing ladies,” as they’re known around the hospital, work as a group from 8 to 11:30 a.m. every Tuesday crafting the cat and dog pillows. Brackett gets a kick out of meeting new parents who still have the pillows they received when they were born at the hospital a generation ago.
“I wanted to do something useful,” Brackett said when asked why she began volunteering at the hospital in 1978. “We’ve always supported the hospital and we appreciate all the good things the hospital does for the children here.”
Her husband of nearly 70 years, Harold, spent many years volunteering as a hospital escort. The couple, who lived in Hinsdale for more than 50 years before moving to a Burr Ridge retirement home in 2002, has three children, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Kathryn Brackett has accumulated nearly 5,000 volunteer hours at the hospital. She used to volunteer with other local organizations but now spends all her volunteer time at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.
“We are fortunate that our hospital is Kathryn’s chosen place to volunteer,” said Sher Fox, director of volunteer services at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “She is an asset to the volunteer department and the entire organization.”
