Hinsdale Central student named Volunteer of the Month
Hinsdale – With a career in medicine in her future, 16-year-old Emily Mortimer said the two years she has spent volunteering at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital have been priceless.
“I’ve definitely had a lot of experiences I wouldn’t have had anywhere else,” the Hinsdale Central High School junior said.
Mortimer, who has accumulated 180 hours of volunteer service, was named the hospital’s junior volunteer of the month for August. She works two days a week at the hospital, spending one day delivering flowers to patient rooms and another working in the surgical waiting room. There she answers phones and communicates with families and hospital staff.
The best parts of Mortimer’s job are working with doctors in the surgical waiting room and serving as a friendly face for patients and their families, she said.
“Making people in tense situations feel better and spending time with them is what I really enjoy,” the Hinsdale resident said.
Jean Henry, a fellow hospital volunteer who worked with Mortimer in the surgical waiting room for more than a year, said Mortimer is known for her reliability and promptness.
“In fact, she often arrives early for her shift,” Henry said.
