Hinsdale, Burr Ridge residents among longtime hospital volunteers
Contact: Lisa Parro, senior public relations specialist, Adventist Midwest Health

Hinsdale – Only a few minor aches and pains and the occasional icy driveway have ever prevented Anne Lepore from coming to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital for her usual volunteer shift. The Hinsdale resident was recognized for 30 years of volunteer service to the hospital.

“Volunteering is now part of my life, an aspect which I truly enjoy,” she said.

Although her tasks are straightforward – escorting patients, delivering files and samples to labs – it is nonetheless “a very rewarding experience, servicing others,” Lepore said.

For Lepore, volunteering is accompanied with feelings of great satisfaction.

“That’s what we’re here for, to assist with serving others,” she said.

Lepore was among more than 200 volunteers honored at the hospital’s 57th annual meeting and awards luncheon, held April 23 at Ruth Lake Country Club in Hinsdale. In 2009, 548 volunteers worked 45,185 hours at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, said Sher Fox, the hospital’s volunteer director.

“Our volunteers are the finest group of people you will ever meet because they are here for all the right reasons,” Fox said. “Nobody has to show up, but they make a major contribution that is visible. They take the time to smile and to help out everyone they meet.”

After retiring from a rewarding career in a prestigious firm, Burr Ridge resident Charlotte Kornack decided to spend her free time volunteering at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. Twenty years later, she is still an active volunteer, doing everything from flower delivery to working in the volunteer office to mailing materials for the quality department. She has also previously served on the volunteer board as recording secretary and is known for bringing chocolate to sustain her friends in the volunteer office.

Kornack describes her volunteer experience as “gratifying and wonderful.” Days spent volunteering are those she loves and looks forward to.

“My experience at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital has been so wonderful, I would advise anyone to get involved,” Kornack said.

Kornack has three children and speaks fondly of her many grandchildren. Since volunteering at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, Kornack’s family and friends have continued to grow.

“I’ve made so many lasting friendships with the caring women I volunteer with,” she said.
