Enter hospital’s pink ribbon art contest

Media contact: Lisa Parro, senior public relations specialist, Adventist Midwest Health, Lisa.parro@ahss.org

Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 U.S. women. In 2009, an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in U.S. women, according to breastcancer.org. Adventist Hinsdale and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospitals invite community members to express their feelings about breast cancer artistically in recognition of October as breast cancer awareness month.

The hospitals’ Pink Ribbon Art Contest is open to all amateur artists age 18 and older; professional artists are invited to display and donate their work. All entries must be related to breast cancer awareness, education or experiences. Entries are due Sept. 15.

Entries will be judged according to two categories: two-dimensional (including paintings, drawings, photography, etc.) and three-dimensional (sculptures, jewelry, etc.).
Prizes will be awarded Sept. 30 at Adventist Hinsdale and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospitals during the Breast Cancer Awareness Month Lighting Ceremony. Prizes include $500 Apple gift cards.

Winner need not be present to win, but artists are encouraged to attend the ceremony; it’s inspiring, educational and free. A silent auction will be held for donated art pieces, with proceeds benefiting Adventist Hinsdale and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospitals Breast Cancer Education and Outreach funds.

“Join our hospitals in making a stand. We will not allow breast cancer to keep taking our mothers, our sisters, our daughters or ourselves,” said Sandy Muller, technical manager of women’s services at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s outpatient imaging centers. “
Show your commitment to the cause by submitting your art.”

In addition, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and Adventist GlenOaks Hospital are hosting a children’s essay contest to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Essays are due Sept. 15; the contest is open to all children age 17 and younger. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: age 10 and younger; age 11-14; age 15-17.
