Donate blood at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s Blood Center

Hinsdale – To celebrate National Blood Donor Month, Adventist Lab Partners Blood Center, 121 N. Elm St., Hinsdale, will raffle off a 47-inch flat-screen television in January. Any qualified donor of blood, platelets or double red cells is eligible to enter the raffle.

Since 1970, National Blood Donor Month has been observed in January to promote the importance of blood donation. January is also one of the most difficult months for blood centers across the country since many regular donors are on vacation. Cold and flu symptoms also keep people from donating, but the need is still there. With the changes in weather come more traumatic injuries due to accidents, making the need for blood even greater.

Adventist Lab Partners Blood Center supplies blood to patients at four local hospitals: Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. Together, these hospitals use more than 12,000 pints of blood each year. Any blood not collected at the ALPS Blood Center in Hinsdale is purchased from larger blood collection organizations; currently, the ALPS Blood Center is only able to supply 20 percent of the blood needed at the four hospitals. Officials hope to grow that number to 35 percent by the end of 2012, almost doubling the amount of community donors.

Call ALPS Blood Center at 630-856-7840 to make an appointment to donate blood. The Blood Center is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday. It is located just west of Adventist Hinsdale Hospital in Elmwood Hall.

There are a few general requirements to be eligible to donate blood and platelets:

  • Age: at least 17 (16 year-olds can donate with written permission of parent or guardian)
  • Weight: At least 110 pounds
  • Diet: A well-balanced meal is recommended within four hours of donation
  • Health: General good health, feeling no symptoms of illness
  • Identification: Valid photo identification such as a driver’s license or state identification card
