Contest links arts with healing at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital

Hinsdale – A juried art exhibition at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital will highlight the artistic talents of hospital employees, physicians, volunteers and their families. Co-sponsored by Adventist Midwest Health and The National Arts Program Foundation, the exhibit and awards program features $2,400 in cash prizes.

A reception and presentation of awards will take place at 5 p.m. Nov. 5 at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, 120 N. Oak St., Hinsdale. The public is invited to this free event.

This contest is part of Adventist Midwest Health’s new Healing Arts initiative, which seeks to bring the fine arts – including music and visual and literary arts – to both patients and caregivers at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital.

“Numerous clinical studies have shown a link between art and healing,” said Sue Kett, a healing arts consultant at Adventist Midwest Health. “It reduces both anxiety and the need for pain medication, among other health benefits.”

Employees, physicians, volunteers and their families interested in participating in the National Arts Program Foundation exhibition must register by Oct. 24 by visiting http://www.keepingyouwell.com/EducationEvents/NationalArtsProgram.aspx. The art will be displayed at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital Nov. 5-29 and the public is welcome to visit to view the installation.

Adventist Midwest Health’s Healing Arts program also includes monthly musical performances in Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s atrium and visits to patients at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital from a certified music practitioner harpist. Programs to be launched in the next few months include the installation of rotating art galleries and a portable art cart filled with paintbrushes, easels and other materials for patients to use at the bedside.

“This is the start of something special at Adventist Midwest Health,” said Tricia Treft, manager of pastoral care at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “Our Healing Arts initiative is designed to impact our patients, their families and our staff in a meaningful way by connecting them with the power of the arts at key moments in their lives.”
