Burr Ridge Resident named
Volunteer of the Month
Hinsdale, IL – During her seven years as a volunteer at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, Betty Lou Miller said she has learned a lot about people. A resident of Burr Ridge, Miller was selected the October Volunteer of the Month.
As a volunteer escort, Miller meets a lot of people and likes talking to them as she escorts patients around the hospital. “I enjoy my little conversations with the patients,” she said. “As volunteers, we help make patients feel at home.”
Her ability to communicate with those she helps was key in her selection as was her attention to detail, said Sher Fox, director of volunteers. “Betty (Miller) is considerate and thoughtful. She comes early when needed and substitutes when she can,” Fox said.
When she switched to working part time, Miller decided to fill up her time by volunteering at the hospital. She has logged 1,477 hours as a volunteer. “I’ve learned to know and read people. It’s simply been a wonderful experience,” she said.
Along with her volunteer work and her job as a pharmacist, Miller also enjoys gardening, golfing and spending time with her friends.
The upcoming holiday season provides a great reason to donate the gift of time. Volunteers assist with visitor inquiries, phone reception, flower delivery, food service, patient relations and in the gift shop. They also provide clerical support.
