Annual Kids Helping Kids Toy Drive collects gifts for Adventist Hinsdale Hospital patients
Hinsdale – Members of Hinsdale South High School’s psychology club have collected toys for Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and will deliver them Dec. 19 for the sixth annual Kids Helping Kids Toy Drive.
Hinsdale South psychology teacher Dr. Russell McCormack and club members will deliver more than 1,000 new, unwrapped toys, arts and craft supplies as well as video games on Dec. 19 to the hospital, 120 N. Oak St., in what has become a much anticipated event for hospital staff
Items will go to children served by Hinsdale Hospital’s Pediatric Unit, Behavioral Health Unit and the Emergency Department. Toys are given to children in those units throughout the year.
The annual collection began in 2007, when students decided to give something back to the community, McCormack said. Some club leaders were born at the hospital, while others have received treatment there. Still others volunteer at the hospital.
“We’re really trying to give comfort to a child who’s anxious or stressed or worried,” McCormack said. “This gives a little bit of comfort during a time that’s stressful for people.”
McCormack said students in his five psychology classes have helped donate toys for the drive since Thanksgiving.
Donations are being accepted by the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation. Incorporated in 1986, the Foundation’s mission is to build good will and philanthropic support for Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.
“The hard work and generosity of these young people will make a very big different for hundreds of hospitalized children during what can be a very anxious time for kids,” Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Executive Director Susan King said.
