Having a baby is an exciting time, and Adventist Hinsdale Hospital is here tohelp you prepare for this huge life event! Our wide array of prenatal classes include everything from Baby Care 101 to a tour of the Birck Birth Center, to better acquaint you with your birthing experience. Comprehensive Childbirth Classes
Your Birth, Your Way
This class is designed to help you understand your choices and to help design a personal birthing plan so you can have ‘your birth, your way’! Planning a natural birth? Planning an epidural? All are welcome! The course will also explore the various roles that medicine might play in childbirth. Course participants will also learn how to set realistic expectations and to design a personal plan for how to proceed when labor sets in. A tour of labor and delivery is included. This class meets in four 2.5 sessions, and costs $125.
Learning about what to expect during childbirth can help couples have a more positive birth experience. This fast-paced, one-day prenatal class is taught by a certified childbirth educator for the expectant mother and her support person. This class covers the labor and delivery process, pain management options including the use of epidural anesthesia, comfort and relaxation measures, and indication for cesarean section. We recommend that this class be completed about 1-2 months prior to your due date. Register using the mother's name and fill out the form on the "My Information" section on our website.
Wonderful Weekend Childbirth Class
This is an intensive weekend class, meeting for five hours each day with a break for student-provided lunch. (Students must bring their own bagged lunch). During these two day, we will examine and discuss your priorities and concerns surrounding birth; nutrition and exercise during pregnancy; typical progression of pregnancy, labor and birth; common variances and medical interventions; a variety of comfort measures; the postpartum recovery period and preparing for life with a newborn. The cost is $220 for the birthing woman and her support person (optional) and includes a coursebook.

Birck Birth Center Tour
Tour the Birck Birth Center and see where thousands of babies are born each year. Acquaint yourself with the birthing suites, the mother/baby rooms, Neonatal Intensive Care and Well-Baby Nurseries before your baby is born. Participants should meet in the front lobby.
Navigating Early Pregnancy
This 3 hour class is designed to educate parents on how to care for themselves and their baby for optimal health in early pregnancy. We will cover optimal nutrition, exercises for comfort and stamina, and what common tests are performed in the first trimester. Cost is $50.00.
Breastfeeding improves the infant's immune system, fosters mother/infant bonding and promotes recovery from childbirth. Our Breastfeeding class features a certified lactation consultant who will instruct you on tools and strategies that help you ease into breastfeeding with confidence. A good start in breastfeeding paves the way to a mutually beneficial and enjoyable experience for you and your baby. Your instructor will discuss many tools and techniques to get breastfeeding off to a good start. Fathers are encouraged to attend. We recommend that this class be completed one month prior to your due date.
It is strongly recommended that you are currently taking or have completed a Prepared Childbirth Class prior to taking Natural Childbirth. Prepared Childbirth content will not be covered in this class.
This interactive class is designed for those couples who desire to have an unmedicated labor and birth. As an extension of what is taught in your Prepared Childbirth class, we will have more time devoted to discuss and practice various natural comfort measures. We will also further discuss how to minimize the need for medical interventions and how to become an active participant in your labor and birth. After taking this class you will feel more empowered and confident in your ability to have a natural birth.
VBAC (Vaginal Birth after Cesarean)
This VBAC class will review vaginal birth basics, relaxation techniques, coping strategies, and medication options. This class will also provide a Cesarean section review including indications for the procedure and pre/post-operative considerations. This class is a must-have if you’re looking for a VBAC!
Positions and Comfort Measures for Labor
Pain management is a very important part of labor, and birth. Whether you’re planning an epidural or not, it’s still important to learn to work with your body to facilitate an easier, and less painful labor. Taken from our popular ‘Your Birth, Your Way’ class, this class is a simple three hour session highlighting movement and pain management as your work to meet your baby. It is recommended that a Prepared Childbirth or other series be taken in advance to registration.
Expecting twins or triplets? Learn about caring for more than one baby from an experienced mother of multiples. Our qualified instructor discusses the unique challenges of coping and reveals proven tips that make basic care easier. We recommend that this class be completed before the end of your second trimester.
Have a Better Birth: Hire a Doula
What is a doula? Take this 2 hour class to learn what the research says about doula support, discuss myths about doulas, and how to find and the right doula for you. In this class we will also discuss how to interview a doula, what questions to ask, and what kinds of services are commonly provided. $20 per couple.
My Mommy's Having a Baby
Help your child welcome your baby and adjust to having a tiny sibling. Children ages 3 to 7 will learn what to expect when coming to the hospital to visit mom and the new baby, and what it means to be a big brother or sister. Children will get a chance to practice how to hold and diaper a baby with the use of dolls. Children must be accompanied by either one or both parents. Bring your cameras as there will be lots of opportunities for photos! We recommend that you complete this class about one month before your due date.
Labor and Delivery: A Refresher Course
Whether you're delivering your second child or your fifth, this class can help you prepare to meet your little one. This is a 2 hour workshop for mothers and birth support to attend together. This is a refresher course, so participants must have previously taken a comprehensive childbirth class.
Lamaze Childbirth Education Class
Lamaze practices are based on the best medical evidence available and are designed to promote a safe and healthy pregnancy and birth! This four-week series will take the mystery out of childbirth and help you better understand how your body works, how to manage challenges, and what you can do to ensure a safe, healthy, and satisfying childbearing experience. Topics include Understanding Labor, Practicing Comfort and Relaxation Techniques, Medical Procedure and Cesarean Sections, Postpartum Health, and Newborn Care. Lamaze education is designed to give you the information you need to make the healthiest decisions for your baby and give you more confidence in your body’s natural ability to go through the process. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring a blanket and/or pillows.
Hypnobirthing (TM) - The Mongan Method
HypnoBirthing® is a childbirth education class that prepares the mind and body for labor and birth. The classes are designed to build confidence in the birthing body and baby through breathing, relaxation, and visualization techniques. These techniques are demonstrated and practiced in class; however, it is the daily practice and conditioning that happens outside of the class that really helps to make this a very positive experience. Included in the class:

Classes for Baby
Baby Care 101
In our baby care basics class, parents learn the following skills: feeding, umbilical cord care, diapering and bathing, along with proven techniques to comfort a fussy baby, reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and how to recognize the signs of illness in a newborn. Participants will also be taught the latest recommendations for car seat safety. Expectant grandparents are welcome to enroll. We recommend this class be completed approximately one month prior to your due date.
Happiest Baby on the Block
While wanting to soothe your new baby is instinctual, actually knowing how to do it is a learned skill. This class centers on pediatrician and author Dr. Harvey Karp’s step-by-step process that explains how even the fussiest of babies can be soothed to give new parents more peace and confidence.
Expectant couples and parents with newborns 2-months and under will benefit from this hands-on class. Babies are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Classes include The Happiest Baby on the Block instructional DVD and soothing sounds CD. Class is 2 hours long, and $45
All About Attachment Parenting
What is attachment parenting? This two hour class will discuss the ideas and philosophies behind one of the most popular parenting approaches today. We will discuss the long-term goals of parenting this way, and the 8 principles of attachment parenting for babies and young children. Common myths will also be covered, as well as how to find support and handle criticisms. $20 per couple.
Baby at the Table
Learn the ins-and-outs of making your baby’s very first foods! This two-hour course will show parents how easy it is to make natural, yummy, healthy homemade baby foods. And the best news is, homemade baby foods do not require hours in the kitchen, or hundreds of dollars’ worth of special equipment or ingredients. Class fee is $20, and the class is 1.5 hours long.
Infant massage promotes bonding with parents and caregivers, and is a wonderful tool to learn to read your baby’s cues. This class is good for newborns through pre-crawlers, but the benefits you learn in this class will benefit your child for years to come.
Join us for a hands-on workshop to learn the benefits of infant massage, how to perform infant massage strokes and how to read your infant's cues. Please bring a blanket to put baby on, and be prepared for hands-on fun! This workshop is 90 minutes and includes handouts to take home, as well as massage oil that parents customize for their little one during the class to take home. Cost is $65 per couple.
Classes for Mom
Diastasis Rectus Abdominus Rehab Class
This 60-90 minute, 6 week class is intended for those women who think they may have (or know that they have) separated abdominal muscles whether they are 6 weeks postpartum or 60 years postpartum! Taught by a women’s health physical therapist and pilates instructor, you will learn about specific tips to help you close this separation in the first 30 minutes of class. The remainder of the class will be spent instructing you in the home exercises that are essential to your success each week. This class is $140, and class dates are set based on demand. Be prepared for emergencies. Our Infant/Child CPR course teaches caregivers how to recognize and respond to breathing emergencies in infants and children. It is designed for those who care for infants and children on a full or part time basis. Techniques will be demonstrated using a baby manikin. This course does not provide certification.
Toddler at the Table
Are you stumped at what to feed your Toddler? Can’t get over the hump from purees to table foods? Want more healthful options, or less stress at mealtime? Want to expand their palette past chicken nuggets and cheese? Join us in the kitchen to discuss how and when to transition to finger foods, offering healthy and complete food to your toddler, dealing with picky eaters and more. Class fee is $20, and is two hours long.
Aromatherapy for the Family
Come learn how aromatherapy can help you live a healthier lifestyle! Essential oils are more than just pretty smells, they can actually go hand in hand with family wellness. Oils are good for everything from cleaning to mood enhancement, and they’re chemical free! Handouts and samples are included in this educational 90 minute workshop.
Postpartum Wellness Workshop
Learning to balance your physical needs with the needs of caring for baby is always a challenge. This two hour course was designed to educate women who are still pregnant on how to care for themselves during their postpartum period. This class will go over the normal changes that happen after baby comes home, and options like placenta encapsulation.
