Glendale Heights – In the last 20 years there has been much change in the world of hospital technology - especially in the medical records industry. Vicki Babikan, director of health information management at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, has dealt with the huge shift from paper to electronic patient medical records.

“It’s an entire industry change,” said Babikan. “Going paperless is a big challenge and requires a lot of time and effort. I am very detail oriented, so it has been a huge adjustment, a shift in how we do things and the way we think.”

Babikan started at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital in 1993 as a file clerk. Three years later, still wanting to work with the organization, but wanting a closer commute, the Bartlett resident accepted a coding position at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital. Ten years later, Babikan was offered the director job.

For her commitment to Adventist Midwest Health’s mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ, Babikan was one of five Adventist Midwest Health leaders to receive the organization’s pillar award at its quarterly leadership development institute in June.

“This department simply could not run without the organization and knowledge that Vicki brings every day,” said Bruce C. Christian, chief executive officer of Adventist GlenOaks Hospital. “With almost 20 years of experience in the medical records field, she is our expert.”

For Babikan, her position is more than just crunching numbers and sorting through statistics; it’s about understanding each of her colleagues on a personal level and working hard to help everyone she can.

“I am grateful for all the opportunities that I have been given and for everything I have learned over the past 19 years,” said Babikan. “I have had such great opportunities to grow professionally and I continue to learn on a daily basis.”

Her latest project continues to be the transition from paper to electronic, a goal which the company has set for 2015.

“It has been a real challenge, but I have a great staff and we all work well together,” said Babikan.

Babikan and her husband, Peter, have a two-year-old daughter, Madelyn.
