Hospital volunteer provides over 350 hours of service
Hinsdale – Clarendon Hills resident Diane Gibson was named the May volunteer of the month after two years and more than 350 hours of service. After Gibson retired, she wanted to spend time giving back the community and helping others. As a result, she began volunteering at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and has enjoyed working in several different departments through out the hospital.
Currently, Gibson works every Wednesday morning as an escort volunteer. Her duties include transporting patients to and from testing, bringing specimen and blood samples to the labs, discharging patients, and doing other errands for hospital staff. She has also volunteered in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU), maternity department, and pre-anesthesia department.
“I enjoy working as an escort because it allows me to stay active while helping others,” Gibson said. “The wonderful volunteers, patients, and hospital staff that I have worked with during my time as a volunteer have also made my job very enjoyable.”
Gibson worked for 12 years as the director of human resources with a not-for-profit organization until she retired in 2007. She and her late husband have two children and three grandchildren. Gibson says the incredible support that the hospital staff and patients give to volunteers is the most rewarding part of her experience.
“We are extremely fortunate to have Diane as a devoted and energetic volunteer,” said Sher Fox, director of volunteer services at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “She is an asset to the volunteer program and the entire organization.”
