Former patient donates gifts to hospital for sick children

Glendale Heights – Addison resident Paul Menzel said it is amazing how much one person can make a difference. Menzel, who spent three months in Adventist GlenOaks Hospital as a 14-year-old, wanted to make a difference by delivering gifts to children treated in the hospital’s Shanahan Emergency and Trauma Center during the holiday season.

Menzel, who is the vice president of the Addison Chamber of Commerce and store manager of Life Storage, said he knows how lonely it feels to be in a hospital during Christmas time. “I want to give these kids something special to have and hold during their time at the hospital,” he said.

Menzel said Life Storage donated numerous presents including 12 coloring books and 12 boxes of crayons, teddy bears, games and puzzles. He and his boss, Matt Clark, who dressed as Santa Claus, delivered the presents and visited hospital staff Dec. 16.

The gifts will be passed out to children treated in the emergency department beginning on Christmas Eve. The hospital staff will continue to give the toys out until they have all been distributed.

“I wanted to make the hospital experience easier for kids who have to be in the hospital during the holidays,” Menzel said.

Michelle Kallevik, executive director of GlenOaks Hospital Foundation, expressed appreciation for Menzel’s generous donation.

“Clearly Adventist GlenOaks Hospital holds a special place in Paul’s heart because he was so willing to give back and impact a new generation of patients,” Kallevik said.
