Elmhurst resident, 87, is hospital volunteer of the month

Hinsdale – After raising 10 children and actively volunteering at his church, committed Christian John Stob, an 87-year-old Elmhurst resident, isn’t ready to stop lending the proverbial helping hand. He recently was named Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s volunteer of the month.

Stob has served more than 1,815 hours in 15 years and plans to keep going. As an escort, his primary job is to take patients to and from tests; he also delivers specimens to the lab and blood to ambulatory care and surgical units.

“I do whatever is needed, because I’m here to help,” Stob said. “Jesus served people and I want to follow in his footsteps. I’m a people person and consider my work at the hospital an opportunity to talk to people and encourage them along their way.”

Sher Fox, director of volunteer services at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, said Stob has a knack for making each patient feel special.

“John has been faithful, reliable and calmly reassuring to our patients for 15-and-a-half years,” Fox said. “He is a wonderful example of someone who shares Christian love and compassion.”

Service is a way of life to Stob. He and his first wife, Sadie, were married 31 years and raised five children before her death. His second wife, Elaine, also had five children, whom Stob later helped raise. Together, the couple has 30 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Through the years, Stob has served Lombard Christian Reformed Church as an elder, a deacon and a member of the mission committee. He and his wife make sure all the welcome cards and pens are in the pews and assist wherever they are needed.
