And Liberia was a very https://splinternews.com/a-shocking-campaign-is-telling-college-students-how-lik-1793856230 interesting place, because even though this is a very small country, we've found that the
frequency of sickle cell http://creativity-online.com/work/unacceptable-acceptance-letters-unacceptable-acceptance-letters/46547 was significantly different from one part of the country to the next. Yet malaria was
endemic throughout the country.
So I'm scratching https://www.huffingtonpost.it/2016/04/20/college-violenze-sessuali_n_9735732.html my head and thinking, I had come there to do this project on genetic adaptations to malaria.
But in this tiny country, there were significant differences in the primary https://www.prisonplanet.com/harvard-crimson-ad-warns-prospective-female-students-they-will-be-raped.html genetic trait that we thought at the
time controlled response to malaria, to falciparum malaria.
And I began looking at that, going back to the literature. And at that time, colleagues at Rockefeller and Albert Einstein http://dailybruin.com/2016/04/27/keshav-tadimeti-sexual-assault-awareness-is-important-but-action-is-key/ were looking at cyanate salts as with their urea base as a way to inhibit sickling. And I thought wow,
that's really interesting. I wonder where I could get 0.3 molar cyanate.
And then I realized from plants, from cassava. So in this pattern in Liberia, what we saw was that in the
southeastern part of the country down here near Cote d'Ivoire, very low frequencies of sickle cell. But in the
northwestern part of the country, high frequencies of sickle cell.
Remember I said this is only 200 miles across here. And probably about 50 miles, 75 miles deep. So very small
country, not a lot of cultural diversity, and yet significant differences in the frequency of sickle cell. And
then I realized that in the Northwestern part of the country,
people were eating cassava, but only as a green vegetable accompaniment to rice. And in the southeastern part,
they were eating https://www.the-pool.com/news-views/latest-news/2016/16/powerful-videos-highlight-the-problem-of-rape-at-university cassava every day. It was a major staple. So their exposure to the plant phytochemicals was much
greater in the southeastern part of the country than in the northwestern part.
