View new technology up close and personal in the operating room

Media contact: Lisa Parro, senior public relations specialist, Adventist Midwest Health, Lisa.parro@ahss.org

Hinsdale – Get an up close and personal view of new technology in Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s operating room during a free educational event. A hands-on demonstration of the da Vinci robotic surgery system will follow a physician lecture during an event called “What’s New for Women’s Health?”

Physicians will lead a panel discussion from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26 at the Central Park West Building of the Oak Brook Park District, 1450 Forest Gate Road in Oak Brook. Shuttles will depart at 4:30 p.m. for a live demonstration of the da Vinci robotic surgery system at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, 120 N. Oak St. The shuttle will return to Central Park West between 6:30 and 7 p.m.

Dr. Naheed Akhter will address minimally invasive gynecological procedures; Dr. Kimberly Bruneau will speak about treatment of fibroid tumors and Dr. Sudarshan Sharma will talk about the role of robotic surgery for gynecological cancers.

Sharma was the first physician to perform a surgical procedure with the da Vinci system at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital when he performed a hysterectomy on a woman with uterine cancer in 2009. The da Vinci system provides the physician with a three-dimensional view of the patient’s anatomy and enables the surgeon to perform complicated procedures in a minimally invasive manner.

“Using the da Vinci is better than looking with your eyes,” Sharma said. “And that’s a plus during surgery. It’s much less invasive than other surgery techniques. The patient generally recovers faster with much less pain.”

Bruneau will advise women on how to stay active despite fibroid tumors, non-cancerous growths that develop within the uterus or just outside. Fibroid tumors can cause heavy bleeding during periods, pain and bloating.
