Tree lighting commemorates Breast Cancer Awareness at Adventist La Grange Memorial
La Grange – Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital invites the community to attend its annual Pink Tree Lighting Ceremony on Oct. 1.

Singer-songwriter Heather Lynn Horton will be featured as part of the hospital’s ceremony, which begins at 6 p.m. Oct. 1 in the lobby of the hospital, 5101 S. Willow Springs Road. The ceremony will include a display of artwork submitted through the hospital’s annual Pink Ribbon Art Contest. Winners will be named, and Horton will perform after the lighting of the tree.

The event will kick-off the hospital’s month-long commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, said Janet Narish, radiology supervisor.

Also scheduled to speak that evening are Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer Lary Davis and Diagnostic Radiologist Dr. Mita Majmundar, who will discuss the importance of being screened for breast cancer.

“Our tree lighting is a chance for us to honor all those who have battled cancer,” Davis said. “It is a physically and emotionally trying experience, and our hospital works hard to provide any support people need while facing this disease.”

It is an honor to host the community for this commemoration, said Mary Murphy, chief nursing officer at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital.

“We invite the community in for events such as our tree lighting to show that the people we take care of are more than just patients,” Murphy said. “They are our family, our neighbors and our friends,”

The hospital hosts this annual event to show support for patients who have been treated for breast cancer, as well as the doctors who work so hard treating them, said mammographer Halina Slodyczka.

“We work with these patients day to day and year to year, seeing them through tough times and back to good times,” Slodyczka said.

Events like the tree lighting ceremony helps to maintain a connection with patients, said Jennie Lindau, administrative assistant in Radiology.

“It shows them just how much we care about them,” Lindau said.
