Three from Adventist GlenOaks among ‘50 Men Who Cook’

Contact: Lisa Parro, senior public relations specialist, Adventist Midwest Health,

Glendale Heights – Two Adventist GlenOaks Hospital physicians and the hospital food service director will show off their culinary skills in a fundraiser for local schools. Dr. Joseph Shanahan, Dr. Jasdip S. Brar and Greg Hansen are among the “50 Men Who Cook,” an event scheduled at 6 p.m. Sept. 25 at Hilton Indian Lakes Resort, East Pavilion, 250 W. Schick Road, Bloomingdale.

Adventist GlenOaks Hospital is the presenting sponsor of the Bloomingdale Chamber of Commerce’s second annual event, in which 50 prominent men from the community will prepare their favorite dishes for attendees to sample and judge. Proceeds benefit Bloomingdale schools wellness programs.

Shanahan, medical director of emergency services, will prepare his famous “firehouse spaghetti.” It’s the dish Shanahan and his staff prepare from scratch every Christmas season as a treat for local firefighters and paramedics; the team has been doing so for at least 15 years and feeds five different departments each year.

The dish is a family recipe from his wife, Joann, who claims Sicilian heritage. It includes a “secret blend of spices,” according to Shanahan. But what really makes the firehouse spaghetti are the many fresh ingredients – including dried spaghetti imported from Italy and real Italian sausage.

As for Brar, he prefers baking to cooking and often shared his homemade brownies with nurses during his residency. For this event, Brar is baking a flourless chocolate cake. He’s also using the cake to raise awareness for celiac disease and to demonstrate tasty ways to follow a gluten-free diet.

“I like taking care of people and making them feel better,” Brar said. “Sometimes that’s easier to do with a chocolate cake. People at this event will experience our natural talents, which doesn’t happen when we’re wrapped up in a white coat.

Greg Hansen, food service director, will prepare vegetable kabobs.

“I want to showcase the delicious vegetarian items on the menu at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital,” Hansen said. “I’m looking forward to having a good time.”
