Renovated hospital nursery opens
Hinsdale – Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s renovated well baby nursery officially opened June 30. The new space accommodates 16 babies and features three large baby exam areas for pediatricians and a two-bed admitting area. Walls leading from the old nursery to postpartum patient rooms and classrooms were torn down to create the space.

The nursery is part of the hospital’s Birck Family Women’s and Children’s Center, a comprehensive program that carries a Level III standing for obstetric and neonatal care. This designation by the Illinois Department of Health certifies that Adventist Hinsdale Hospital offers the highest degree of quality care for high-risk moms and high-risk newborns, with 11 Level III neonatal intensive care unit beds. The hospital’s Maternal Fetal Medicine Center provides state-of-the-art care to women with high-risk pregnancies.

“This renovation means our space is better configured to accommodate our newborns, from the healthiest babies to those needing special care in our neonatal intensive care unit,” said BettySue Netzel, director of women’s and children’s services. “Our physicians, nurses and other members of our clinical care team have everything they need at their fingertips to provide excellent care.”

Construction took three months and cost $712,000. Part of the cost was financed by the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation, which raised $160,000 to support the project and the needs of the neonatal intensive care unit.

“This project is another example of how we are modernizing our facility to care for our patients right here in the community,” said David L. Crane, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s chief executive officer.

There are currently three levels of nurseries in the United States – Level I, II and III.  Level III nurseries provide the widest variety of advanced care available for all newborns. Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, part of the University of Chicago Perinatal Network, was first designated as a Level III obstetric and neonatal care center in 2000.
