Remembrance ceremony March 6 to honor organ donors
Hinsdale – To honor those who have given the gift of sight, life and mobility, Adventist Midwest Health will partner with the Illinois Eye Bank to hold an organ donor remembrance ceremony March 6.

The event runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 6 in the Calandra Chapel at the hospital, 120 N. Oak St. in Hinsdale.

Among those participating in the event will be Rob and Lori Chana, a donor family from Clarendon Hills. Their son Cameron was a cornea and organ donor in 2009. Also making a presentation will be Cyndy Loula of Bolingbrook, a cornea recipient in June of 2008.

Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital Registered Nurse Linda Main and Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital Chaplain and Pastoral Care Manager Vicky Syren will also speak.

Included at the event will be a remembrance table, where people may display a photo, poem or memento of their loved ones.

This is the first time such a memorial event has been held by the two organizations, said Mary Schlereth, professional education coordinator with the Illinois Eye Bank. March is National Eye Donor Month and April National Donate Life Month.

“All the Adventist hospitals are very supportive of the eye, organ and tissue donation process,” Schlereth said. “Hinsdale specifically had a huge increase in eye donors.”

Last year, Adventist Hinsdale Hinsdale had 30 eye donors, compared to 11 donors the year before, Schlereth said. Adventist La Grange Memorial and Adventist Bolingbrook Hospitals also saw a donor increase.

Schlereth, as well as a representative from Gift of Hope, speak at orientation for all new clinical hires at the hospital, said Donna Kanak, clinical educator and quality consultant with Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital.

“There are so many different people that are touched by organ donation, including the families and the recipients, but also the staff that are involved in caring for these patients and families,” Kanak said. “Because it touches the lives of so many people, it’s become part of the healing process for people who have lost family.”

Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by March 1 by calling the Adventist Midwest Health call center at (630) 856-7525, though walk-ins are accepted the night of the event.
