Providing superior patient care is leader’s goal
Chicago resident earns Adventist Midwest Health pillar award
La Grange – Whether the goal is infection control or swiftly moving patients into effective treatment, it’s all about outcomes for Sue Cascino, RN, MSN, regional director of quality management for Adventist Midwest Health.
Based at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, Cascino directs the work of the quality management teams at all sites.
“The function of quality management is to assure that services are the best they can possibly be,” Cascino said. “I work hand-in-hand with the clinical teams to make sure that patient care is of the highest quality. We work with nurses, physicians, therapists – anyone who touches the patient. The delivery of quality care is a collaborative effort, a team accomplishment.”
For this commitment to her staff and to Adventist Midwest Health’s mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ, Cascino was one of five leaders to receive the organization’s pillar award at Adventist Midwest Health’s leadership development institute.
“Sue is a crucial part of our excellent quality management program,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Richard Carroll. “She has a passion for providing superior patient care that is an inspiration to everyone who works with her.”
According to Cascino, the goals of the quality management program are to implement best practices in all aspects of the hospital’s operation, and ensure compliance with the standards established by regulatory agencies such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the Illinois Department of Public Health.
“For example, we worked very hard on getting patients who had heart attacks to the cardiac catheterization lab in a timely fashion,” Cascino said. “It’s important that they get this treatment very quickly.”
Cascino has worked in quality management at Adventist Midwest Health for seven years, and has been in her current position for four years. She completed her bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Iowa and earned her master’s degree in nursing at Loyola University Chicago. Cascino worked in medical surgical nursing as a staff nurse, and as a nursing director before moving into case management and quality management.
A native of the northwest side of Chicago, Cascino lives in Norwood Park Township near Park Ridge. She has two sons and daughter.
Pillar award nominations were solicited from Adventist Midwest Health’s senior leadership team. To be eligible for an award, leaders must demonstrate their commitment to the organization’s standards of behavior: sense, help, acknowledge, respect and explain. They must also demonstrate measurable results on the quarterly goals set for their departments. These goals are organized under the seven categories, or pillars, of spiritual life, people, clinical, service, community, growth, and stewardship.
One pillar award winner is chosen from each of the organization’s four suburban hospitals and a fifth winner is chosen from among the organization’s non-hospital programs and shared services support departments. Pillar awards will be presented at the organization’s quarterly leadership development institutes, held in January, April, July and October.
