Mary Ann Gomez, of Lombard, is Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital’s 2011 employee of the year. She is pictured with Chief Executive Officer Rick Mace.
Bolingbrook – Ask Mary Ann Gomez to describe her job at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and she might respond she is the “Jill of all Trades.”
That’s because Gomez, a registered nurse on medical/surgical telemetry unit, cares for patients and occasionally fills in as charge nurse. She oversees four to six patients and trains new nurses every day with a smile.
“I’m an energetic person who loves to talk and interact with others,” said Gomez, of Lombard. “I believe laughter and a positive mental attitude are the best medicines. I also have a loud voice and many geriatric and hard of hearing patients love it.”
For her work both inside and outside the hospital walls, Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital recently named Gomez its 2011 Employee of the Year.
“Mary Ann’s service to her patients and co-workers has far exceeded the requirements of her job,” said Rick Mace, chief executive officer of Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. “The level of compassion she has for her patients has been recognized over and over by the numerous letters and cards I receive from family members. She is simply a positive, uplifting person to work with.”
Gomez came to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital in 2009, one of 12 accepted nurses out of 200 applicants for its new nurse graduate program. Before nursing, Gomez worked a variety of jobs including waitressing and customer service.
“Nursing is very rewarding,” Gomez said. “When I drive home at night, I try to think of the people I made smile that day, patients as well as families who were put at ease, because I tried my best to explain and empathize with them.”
Community service is also important to Gomez. Some of her activities have included organizing a toiletries drive at Jackson Middle School in Villa Park. The drive netted more than 1,000 items for Adventist Midwest Health mission trip to Costa Rica in January. Gomez also helped with the hospital’s cancer awareness committee.
Gomez has been a Girl Scout leader, a "Friend of the Library" at Helen Plum Memorial Library in Lombard and PTA board member/committee chair. She is also actively involved in Willowbrook High School’s music boosters. She enjoys cooking, so Gomez is a contributor to the hospital’s monthly nursing newsletter recipe page.
“I like that every day is different and that I can affect so many people, hopefully positively,” Gomez said.
Gomez is currently enrolled in the bachelor of science nursing program at Benedictine University in Lisle and will graduate May 2013. She also cares for her three children - Elizabeth, 15; Tim, 13; and Kathleen, 12—and her 3-year-old golden retriever, Mickey.
She was recognized at Adventist Midwest Health’s annual Employee of the Year celebration, held in February. She received a plaque and a $1,000 check.
