Our Adventure Begins

Nov 5

It’s finally here! After months of planning, a team of missionaries from AMITA Health traveled to the Dominican Republic for a seven-day trip to serve those in punishing poverty.

Our team is made up of 25 physicians, nurses and staff from AMITA Health. We come from many different types of positions and specialties from across our health system. We have primary care physicians, Ob/Gyne, pediatrics, ER, a physician assistant, physical therapy, and a Creole-speaking chaplain. We even have Larry Dry, our chief operating officer for AMITA Health St. Alexius Medical Center Hoffman Estates and AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center Elk Grove Village, with us on this trip!

Most of the team here works at the legacy Alexian Brothers facilities, and others, like me, work for all of the AMITA Health hospitals. My name is Julie Busch and I am the AVP of Communications. This is my seventh mission trip with our organization. I’ll be updating you with all of our activities this week as we extend the healing ministry of Jesus to the Haitian community.

Tomorrow, we will travel about 40 minutes away to a local batey. These bateys started decades ago as a place for sugar cane workers from Haiti to live, but over time, there was no way out of this way of life. Now, they are not recognized as citizens of Haiti or the Dominican Republic, and so they are in flux, living in extreme poverty in ram-shackled homes.

Our host, Kevin Adair, said these villagers know we are coming and are already deeply thankful for our services. Kevin and his team have given out tickets to the villages and we are expecting a tremendous turnout this week.

Some patients will also come from neighboring villages in remote areas. They will walk from one batey to another, even sleeping overnight before reaching their destination. These people have fallen through the cracks and we hope to serve all of their medical needs. But the higher calling is to serve their hearts with compassion and dignity.

This evening, after dinner, our team gathered for a reflection and a briefing of our week ahead. Our leader, John Rapp, SVP/Chief Mission Officer, told us a story about the ministry of Mother Teresa and her care for the sick and dying.

John asked us to remember Jesus’ mission statement … The most important person is the one who is front of you. Our sacred calling is for each person we come in contact with this week will feel valued and cared for eternally.

Hinsdale Ob/Gyn and Brother Missionary

My dear brother and sister missionaries,
I'm glad to see that you have your MoJo (Mobile Journalist), Julie, with you! Her communications allow a whole bunch of us to travel your journey in spirit - extending the healing ministry of Jesus to those in need.
On one of my first mission trips, a seasoned missionary (Jim Today) suggested that we be open to the "God Moments" on our mission trips. Those moments are happening - almost constantly! Please take the time to appreciate God's incredible presence - even in the person who is sitting beside you on the bus.
In God's love,
Lanny
