Learn more about diabetes at free class at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital

Summary: Adventist GlenOaks Hospital is hosting a diabetes education class from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18 at the hospital, 701 Winthrop Ave., Glendale Heights. The class is free but seating is limited; register by calling 630-856-7525.

Glendale Heights – Most of the patients that certified diabetes nurse educator Melanie Siedlinski teaches at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital are not new diabetics, but when it comes to managing their disease, many are doing at least one thing wrong. That’s why Siedlinski is offering a free monthly diabetes education class on keeping diabetes under control. The class is geared toward all diabetics, Type I and Type II, new diabetics and those who have battled the disease for years.

The first two-hour class will meet at 11 a.m. May 18, at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, Dominguez Conference Room, 701 Winthrop Ave., Glendale Heights. Registration is required as seating is limited to 10 participants. Call 630-856-7525.

Topics to be covered include types of medications and how they work; weight loss and carbohydrate counting basics; handling low blood sugar; when to test blood sugar and what constitutes good blood sugar numbers; how weight gain brings on diabetes and how weight loss improves diabetes.

“For every child born in 2000, 1 in 3 will have diabetes and it’s because of the obesity rate in America,” Siedlinski said. “That’s why we talk about weight and what we can do to help.”

While the subject matter of each class will vary based on the participants’ needs, everyone will leave with a basic meal plan and a better understanding of diabetes. People can come to more than one class. They can also bring a family member or friend. Siedlinski also recommends consulting with a dietitian.

“For diabetics, it seems like there’s 10,000 things to do,” Siedlinski said. “I can help them focus on what’s not working and what they want to change.”

Call 630-856-7525 to register for this class or future diabetes education classes (dates and times will vary). Participants should mention if they have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, the name of their doctor and their current medications.
