Kids’ lemonade stand benefits Adventist Hinsdale Hospital

Media contact: Lisa Parro, senior public relations specialist, Adventist Midwest Health, Lisa.parro@ahss.org

Hinsdale – For many children, summertime lemonade stands are a way to generate pocket change to spend on toys or candy. Not for four Hinsdale children who instead donated proceeds from their lemonade stand to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.

Seven-year-old Anna McCleary and her 9-year-old brother, Sean, and their friends, 7-year-old Ellie Haarlow and 9-year-old Bill Haarlow, recently presented $45 in lemonade stand profits to the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation. In return, they received a tour of the hospital’s pediatric and maternity areas.

“The kids could have spent the money on toys or at Great America,” said Megan McCleary, mother of Anna and Sean. “I was surprised when they said they wanted to give the money to the hospital to help people feel better.”

Last summer, Megan’s children witnessed the compassionate care their father, Tom McCleary, received from hospital staff and cardiac electrophysiologist Dr. Andrew Lawrence when he received a pacemaker to correct an electrical problem in his heart.

“Tom was home with the kids when his heart stopped,” Megan said. “They ran a bunch of tests at the hospital. When I got there with the kids to pick him up, his heart stopped again. It was a pretty big deal for little kids to see.”

Another time Sean, on the day of his birthday party, got hurt at Taekwondo practice and needed stitches. It seemed Sean would miss the fun, but he was in and out of the hospital in 90 minutes.

“He got to the party right at the start,” Megan said.

Megan encouraged the children to present the donation in person, and she’s glad she did.

“I wanted them to see that the money went somewhere, and to feel that they were really helping out,” she said. “I hope they continue to give to their community for the rest of their lives.”

Susan King, executive director of the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation, praised the children for their generosity.

“We’re so impressed by how these children used their energy and resources to help their community,” King said.
