La Grange – About 200 golfers turned out for the La Grange Memorial Hospital Foundation annual Golf Classic on Aug. 12.

The event raised more than $240,000 in gifts and donations, and proceeds will be directed to the Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital Patient Care Center Fund. A matching grant will also come from Community Memorial Foundation.

“This year was one of the biggest turnouts we’ve ever had for a Golf Classic,” said Dr. Luke Sewall, who served as co-chairman of the event alongside fellow community member Jeff Kraus. “We had a pleasantly overwhelming response.”

There were also new sponsorship opportunities available at this year’s event. Sponsors could arrange to have booths set up at several of the holes along the course at the La Grange Country Club, where they could display devices, brochures and other information for the golfers to view.

Also new this year was electronic bidding for the annual silent auction. In the past, Sewall said, people could not bid on auction items until after the day of golf was over, and some people felt rushed.

“This year, we launched bidding two weeks in advance,” Sewall said. “There were bids before we even walked in the door.”

The Foundation is grateful for this year’s support, said Brett Skeen, executive director.

“Thanks to outstanding support from our sponsors, our staff and our doctors, we’re able to continue to help the hospital make a difference in the lives of its patients and their families,” Skeen said.

People from all over the area turn out to help with the Golf Classic, Sewall added, and it’s because of their work that the event is successful.

“It’s our own community supporting our community hospital, which is great,” he said.
