Hospital partners with Naperville school

Program’s mission: Exposing students to real-world medical career experiences

Bolingbrook – Naperville Central High School students interested in pursuing careers in health care will shadow medical professionals at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital as part of a new partnership between the two organizations.

From Jan. 27 to April 21, 15 students enrolled in the school’s Health Occupations course are spending two mornings a week at the hospital. The rest of the week is spent studying human anatomy and physiology in the classroom setting. Students completing both Introduction to Health Occupations, a prerequisite for this program, and Health Occupations can receive dual credit through District 203 and the College of DuPage.

The students will shadow medical professionals in the emergency, diagnostic imaging, medical/surgical, pharmacy, mother/baby, pathology, rehabilitation services, and cardio-pulmonary departments. Representatives of the finance, human resources, marketing, pastoral care and other departments will present information about their roles in the organization.

“We are thrilled to be able to expose these students to real-world medical career experiences through this community partnership,” said Jody Heilstedt, manager of volunteer services for Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. “We look forward to educating these bright students about the many healthcare careers available and sharing our personal journeys into healthcare professions. We also look forward to giving them the opportunity to get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at our state-of-the-art facility and modeling our commitment to exceptional mission-focused patient care.”

The partnership affords Naperville Central students the opportunity to make educated decisions regarding their future.

“Naperville Central is proud to announce this exciting new partnership with Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital,” said  NCHS Assistant Principal Jackie Pfeiffer. “This partnership will allow students in our Health Occupations classes the opportunity to gain first-hand experience about the career options available to them in the medical field.  The students will visit ABH 17 times this semester and will learn about all aspect of the hospital and its operations. The generosity of ABH and their staff allows our students authentic opportunities to apply what they’re learning in the classroom at Naperville Central.”
