Hinsdale, IL – Adventist Hinsdale Hospital is collecting toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes to send to poor children in Honduras. Officials hope to collect at least 2,000 new toothbrushes and 2,000 tubes of toothpaste by May 31. Collection containers are located near the information desk in the hospital’s main lobby and in the volunteer services division, located on level B2. Monetary donations, in sealed envelopes, also will be accepted at the information desk.
The items will be sent to Pan American Health Services in Honduras, where 26 doctors, chaplains and others from the hospital served on a weeklong mission trip in January. Adventist Midwest Health sponsors an international medical mission trip annually for a team of employees and guests. For that trip, the team took 600 toothbrushes; they ran out after just two days. Adventist Midwest Health is planning another trip there during January 2009.
“When we handed these kids toothpaste and toothbrushes, they were so excited,” said Bev Moon, coordinator of hospitality services at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and one of the mission trip participants. “The older children were showing the younger ones how to brush. Oral hygiene is so important for a healthy body and these kids and their families just don’t have the resources. They were all very excited to get toothbrushes.”
Mission trip participants were divided into a clinical team, a vacation Bible school team and a construction crew at a nutritional hospital/orphanage in rural Honduras. Altogether the group helped about 1,500 patients.
“These mission trips are natural extensions of our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ,” said John Rapp, regional vice president of ministries and mission at Adventist Midwest Health. “They remind us of the three dynamics that people took away from their interactions with Christ: compassion, healing and hope.”
