Hospice employees raise money to build African well

Hinsdale – Adventist St. Thomas Hospice and Adventist Health Care at Home employees raised $6,500 to build a fresh water well and a church in Mozambique, Africa.

Members of the hospice’s spiritual life committee spearheaded the project. Hospice Chaplain Branislav “Branko” Dedic showed the committee a video depicting the need for clean water in Mozambique. More than half of Mozambique’s population is chronically dehydrated and in desperate need for clean water. The committee partnered with Maranatha Volunteers International, an international nonprofit organization that coordinates construction of urgently needed buildings.

“While many of us in the United States leave the water running while washing the dishes, people in Mozambique are lucky to have clean water to drink,” said Sharon Murray, coordinator of billing client services and a member of the spiritual life committee. “Despite the current economic times, our employees gave generously to this cause.”

The committee’s goal was to raise $5,000 to build a well. Fundraising began in June 2009. By February 2010, more than $6,500 had been donated – enough not only for the well but also to construct a building for a local congregation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Hospice and Health Care at Home employees contributed recipes to create a cookbook that was sold for $5. Employees also donated coins in exchange for Hershey’s Kisses.

The committee raised awareness by handing out fliers and creating a display including a water bottle marked with the level of money raised. They also created a small skit highlighting how important clean water is and how lightly we used it here in the United States. The committee’s overall effort for awareness encouraged general donations.

“We’re committed to caring not only for our patients but also for the larger worldwide community,” Dedic said. “Projects like this are integral to our mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ.”
