Divided But Not Conquered

Jan 22

Today, the team split in two. Half went to run clinic at the batey while half stayed at the compound to continue seeing patients. Tomorrow the entire team will be spending the day at the batey, as we have come to a good stopping point in our work with the people near El Fuego del Sol. So look for stories tomorrow about our experiences in that community!

Our dental team from Costa Rica, Gianina Soto and Andrea Monge, had a full day of appointments at the compound. It’s amazing the need people have for their services. We’re so grateful that they and their mobile dental suite could join us on this trip! I also have to say that a specific population of Dominicans have also been extremely grateful. While Gianina and Andrea were busy cleaning and pulling teeth and performing oral surgery, the rest of us have been fielding requests from teenage boys for their names, marital statuses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

The rampant case of puppy love that has infected those boys leads me into my next subject. According to reliable sources, Pastor John Rapp and Dr. Bill Puga led an impromptu seminar on love and romance the other day. They had the undivided attention of around 10 kids between the ages of 12 and 15, who were sharing with them the ups and downs and inevitable drama of dating. John and Bill imparted their collective wisdom, and had a wonderful and engaging conversation with the kids. One of the girls said that John was an “hombre lindo,” which means he is a beautiful man. According to John, she first called him “guapo,” which means handsome in Spanish. But that remains unconfirmed. So last year we had “Surgeon Rapp,” and this year we have “Dr. Love!”

After hosting clinic 2 days in a row in the same location, word definitely spread. We felt like Hollywood celebrities being mobbed by the paparazzi as we pulled into the gate! The local mayor hung out with the team again, and did a fantastic job of helping our “bouncers” keep everyone behaving in an orderly fashion! At one point when the line was getting pretty large, a woman fainted. As the team mobilized to take care of her, everyone immediately backed up and gave them space, and expressed their concern for the woman. It changed the entire tone of the line, and seemed to really remind people why we were there and what we were working to accomplish.

La Grange family medicine resident Magda Gabriel said that when we are here, it doesn’t matter if people are grateful, happy, sad, cranky, or throwing a fit. People are people, no matter what part of the world they live in, after all. What matters is that we are helping them, one at a time. According to her, even if we just helped one person it was worth the trip. Thanks for your great wisdom and perspective, Magda!

Speaking of Dr. Magda, all our Hinsdale and La Grange residents have been doing a FANTASTIC job this trip! Dr. Lipinski has been acting as a preceptor, and the specialists have had them “scrub in” on tons of cases and procedures. Roseanne (Hinsdale) and Pam (La Grange) have particularly enjoyed the opportunity to do multiple orthopedic injections in a row, which they don’t normally have back in the States. And on his second mission trip with us, Greg (Hinsdale) kept his patients moving like a pro!

Bringing a dermatologist on the mission trip has been on John’s wish list for years. So we are thrilled that Dr. Stephanie Freels was able to join us! She’s been busy seeing skin complaints, like scalp and foot fungus, acne, dermatitis, chronic eczema, and even a dental sinus, which is something you probably would never see in the States. Our dentists have never seen one of those, either! Some people are requiring injections, and others just oral and topical medications. One man came in with severe scalp acne, which causes large keloids on the back of the scalp. Dr. Freels was able to inject several of those, which should make them smaller. She then was able to treat the chronic condition with antibiotics and topical creams. She has actually been surprised that we haven’t seen any skin conditions that are unique to the tropics so far. This is the first mission trip that Dr. Freels has been on, and she reports she’s enjoying the experience. We’ll check back at the end of the week just to make sure that stays true! One of the most rewarding parts of the experience for her has been teaching the residents. She is able to work with them one-on-one, and can come in and consult on their patients, instead of the other way around. She is loving seeing their confidence in dermatology diagnostics grow as the days progress!

We had a couple of babies come through the clinic today with birth defects. One had an extra digit on her hand, which Dr. Paik tied off. Apparently because it didn’t have a bone, it will just fall off on it’s own with that minimal treatment. Another mother brought her 6 week old baby in with severe hand deformities and a deformity on one of her feet. Dr. Lipinski and Dr. Paik examined her and felt that surgery could go a long way to correcting her conjoined fingers. Our host Kevin has connected us with a hospital in Santo Domingo that specializes in pediatric orthopedics. They have offered to take and treat referrals from our team for free, so this baby is an excellent candidate. The mother was so appreciative of the doctors’ advice and the connection with the hospital. Kevin will connect her and the hospital, and follow up to make sure they see her. Keep her and her family in your prayers, as some serious stigma can accompany birth defects like these. It’s a challenge to help your child live a normal life, and this mother is committed to doing everything she can to make it happen!

Tomorrow we head back to the batey, where we will spend the whole day. Pray for continued energy and good spirits for the team, and that we are able to see and treat all the people who need us most! Thanks for all your comments and support!

Shout-out to Colleen, we miss you back home but we are keeping busy. Brendan and I are keeping busy with baseball, softball, and basketball. Hi Dad (Lanny Wilson!

We think it great what you are doing down in the Dominican Republican. Becky started classes this week AND had to get glasses, bifocals nonetheless. She says, "At least I can see now."

Be safe and we look forward to catching up with you soon.

Much love,

O merciful Father, who have wonderfully fashioned man in your own image, and have made his body to be a temple of the Holy Spirit, sanctify, we pray you, our doctors and nurses and all those whom you have called to study and practice the arts of healing the sick, and the prevention of disease and pain.

We ask special prayers for all the good doctors, nurses, hospital personnel, physical therapy expert & dentist on the mission trip ~ Dominican Republic Medical Relief Team 2014, May You keep them safe, healthy & in good spirits as they continue to minister Your Will.

Give them your ever loving Grace .... and help their families stay strong and in good spirits for their sacrifice to do Your Work.

Strengthen them in body and soul, and bless their work, that they may give comfort to those for whose salvation your Son became Man, lived on this earth, healed the sick, and suffered and died on the Cross. Amen.

I pray that all find opportunity to inspire in each person you serve the unmistakable fact that with faith in the Heavenly Father who loves immeasurably, all can experience more joy than their hearts can ever hold, and more blessings than their faith could ever imagine.

Super Mother.
By: Mady Hagner
A super woman with touching powers,
A bright face with a snow glow like ours,
Giving her heart away, far away, right away,
Before her life passes her by
Traveling many miles across a bay,
Thousands miles across the deep blue sea,

Never care less ever distracted,
Only one thing on her mind; help,
Danger, sickness, and depression,
Hovers hovers hovers over this city like a wool blanket,
Helpless cries, inward happiness nowhere to be found,
Only love they ever feel is a heavenly bound.

Millions of things running in a frantic mind,
Hoping praying she will come home alive,
Shooting, stabbing, pure darkness,
The beauty of sorrow nowhere to be found,
Hopes and dreams are drowned out,
Down down down down,
Into a blackened, bright hole.

As she’s away my world is crushing,
The wall is knocked,
My world is rocked,
World is tossed and turned like a tree in a storm,
Unable to reach her,
Instantly in to temporary mourn,
Click, clack, connected,
Never close enough,
Good thing we are all tough.

Changing one’s life by the moments,
Children abandoned; crying out loud
Whines and screams haunt her dreams,
People running to her with dieses,
Running out of medicine,
Running out of time,
Running out of daylight.

Patching up peoples broken hearts are being restored,
No more sadness thanks to the lord,
Laughing loving longing,
Going home to their warm bed,
No one sleepless night,
Long journey never less worried,
No more roaring crowds,
Everyone very proud.
I love you mommy! im so proud of you!!! <333
