Our First Day Of Clinic – We Hit The Ground Running!

Jan 20

After a quick breakfast, the team hit the road to the day’s site. Our host runs an organization called El Fuego del Sol. Our clinic site for the most of the team today through Thursday is at their main compound. Half the team will be visiting another community on Wednesday and Thursday. They have a large open yard area that is being utilized as both the waiting room and kids camp. Dr. Wilson is seeing his OB/GYN patients in a small house, and the rest of the patients are being seen in a spacious, open-air building.

Despite the usual challenges that accompany setting up in a brand new environment with a brand new host, according to Dr. Lipinski, we saw around 500 patients today. Wow! The team did an outstanding job of remaining flexible and making sure we saw as many people as possible.

Our favorite patients today were two-year-old twin girls. They screamed when we gave them temporary tattoos. They screamed when we checked their height. They screamed when we checked their weight. They screamed when we listened to their heartbeats.  And sometimes, they screamed when we just looked at them.  According to Dr. Shanahan, the only thing wrong with them was that they hated doctors. On the whole, probably not the happiest patients we’ve ever had, but they sure were cute!

Dr. Paik went on a house call for a 9 year old girl who had been hit by a car. She had severe injuries, including a shoulder and femur fracture, and a brain injury. She was taken by ambulance from hospital to hospital for over 10 hours, because no one would accept her as a patient unless she was able to pre-pay. Due to the brain injury, she wasn’t able to speak for almost a month. But miraculously, she is doing very well now, 2 months after the accident! Her speech difficulties have resolved themselves, and the cast that she has from the waist down is only a few weeks away from coming off. Dr. Paik was able to answer a lot of questions from the family about the healing of her bones, and reassure them that she is getting good care, and will make a full recovery!

The big hit today in kids camp was the parachute Dhena brought. Everyone had a great time flinging a basketball through the air while trying to avoid bumping heads. We’ll hopefully be able to post video soon, so you can experience all the fun yourself!

We’ll be back tomorrow at the same site, and hope to be just as busy. Everyone on the team is grateful to not have to pack up all our equipment this evening.

The Case Of The Missing Dentists – UPDATE!

We’re happy to report that the dental team from Costa Rica arrived late last night. They missed their initial connection in Panama, so caught the next flight to the Dominican Republic. After fixing the compressor this morning, and then a slight glitch in the power supply, they were up and running seeing patients this afternoon.

Re: Our First Day Of Clinic – We Hit The Ground Running!

So glad your travels went well and your first day went well -- and that you found the dentists! And 500 patients in the first day! Though I can't imagine anyone screaming around Dr. Shanahan, who is such a sweetheart!

We are missing you and praying for all of you. Thank you for all of your sacrifices being so far from home and away from your families. And thank you for the excellent blog to keep us so well informed! I hope we get to see many pictures, especially of the blogger herself!

Take care!!!

We are very happy to hear about your first day with patients. Anna, Peter, and Sarah all listened in while I read the blog out loud to them. Sarah wants to tell you that we love you, and we miss you. She's in good spirit today, in spite of no show from her tooth fairy last night. I think she understands that it's just too cold outside to fly around. She'll try again tonight. ;-) Looking forward to read about your day tomorrow! Love you lots!!

Good Morning!!!

I hope today brings you great Joy.....as you continue helping the people of the Dominican Republic with some much needed medical care... You are their Angels.....

I can't wait to see more photos!!!

We got some snow (not bad here but I think it is more into the city)...so my brother Paul will continue to keep the runway clear for your return!

In the meantime know we are all praying for you ... and the good work you are doing....

I love you Geoff ...

Lord, You have the name that is above all names. You are Lord forever and there is no one who can challenge Your authority and power. You rule forever and ever, and there is no end to Your Kingdom.

I bring myself before Your throne of grace, and ask that You would look upon me with Your favor.

Your word says that You give strength to the weary, so I ask that You would strengthen me.

Bless me Lord with Your presence, and encourage my heart.

Remind me of Your faithfulness and Your love that I might stand in faith against the issues that I face.

I bind the schemes of the enemy to tear me down, and I rebuke the spirits that have been assigned to harass me. I ask You Lord to minister fresh strength and joy to me. I agree with Your word that says Your plans for me are to give me hope and a future, let it be so, according to Your will. I pray in

What a powerhouse team!! God has blessed you with divine power. 500 huh?? I thought those numbers were only possible in Costa Rica. To see that volume with a new team, in a new surrounding shows the power of the Holy Spirit working in you and through you. You are all my heroes. I'm sad I could not join you, but know that your work will touch thousands of lives. I'm sending arrow prayers on your behalf. Soli Deo Gloria!!!

I can just picture Heidi playing clinic bouncer again, and the craziness that is the pharmacy table (held down by Rich's pristine organization). To sharon bowers...
Sorry to hear you were missing the dentist on the trip. I hate to lose a tooth , let alone a DDS. If you had flossed anyone else, it would have been hard as well . He may have bitten off more than he could chew on this trip. Anyone else filling in ? such a cavity
Hey this is too easy without my competition... That romance dude, Juan . It was Tough to keep up with that guy last year.
The kids are not dead. The guinea pigs haven't escaped, yet. We ate your mother's oatmeal and spaghetti. So survival looks good. But we miss your cooking.
Kristin was going to bed last night and said" if you don't think about mom, it was like a normal day!"
Abby was overjoyed that you. Gave away some of the dolls.
We have had a hardy snowfall last night and it was Fairly cold.
The kids are helping me cook and bake. They are being good too.
We will make some hamburgers tonight, something we can sink our teeth into... Sorry to bring up that dentist thing again.

Dhena!!!!!!

We are soooooo playing some of your kid camp games when you get back...sounds like a blast [except the head bumping] I know the kids will carry these memories forever...no one can take the memories from them.

back home...the Kelly & Dhena world still going on....Dave on accident dialed 911 on his cell last night..few seconds later gets a call on his phone, does not know the number, so doesn't answer, a minute later same number calls...I said you better pick up....this time it went to voicemail...and of course I was right 911 calling him back...he is such a dork....thank goodness for voicemail, otherwise I think the police would have shown up....love OUR world.

miss you!!!!!!! Soto
