Before we left our hotel on Friday, we gathered up vitamins and toys and headed down the street and around the corner to a local orphanage. There are about 40 children, ages 2 to 18, living there. They aren’t in need of medical care, as the government provides that for them, but they welcomed our visit.
When we entered the complex, the children literally came running down the hill and into our arms. It was quite overwhelming. Everyone wanted a hug and to be held. One little girl showed Mary Jo her doll and then she climbed up into Mary Jo’s arms.
“She put her head on my shoulder, and she just stayed there,” Mary Jo said. “All I could think of was my granddaughters.”
Because we hadn’t held kids camp for the last two days, we saved an entire suitcase full of stuffed animals, toys and a caboodle full of nail polish. We weren’t sure that the directors of the orphanage would let us pass the items out, but they agreed, and soon we were handing out Beanie Babies to everyone.
Ivys handed out bottles of vitamins and talked to the children about taking them. We also left them a suitcase full of hand sanitizers, vitamins, toothbrushes, toothpaste and clothing. We didn’t stay long, but everyone was impacted by the visit. It was heartbreaking.
Then we boarded the bus for a five-hour drive to Tela, where we would finish out our weekend with some much needed R&R. We were treated to a movie on the bus, and then a collection of 70s and 80s music videos were played. Weren’t we surprised when the John Lennon song “Imagine” came on! Everyone sang along.
More than anything, we want to thank our families for supporting us in going on this mission trip. We want to thank our colleagues with Adventist Midwest Health for their messages of support this week. We extend our thanks to Gianina and Gabriela for accompanying us as our dental care team, and special thanks to our hosts, Joel and Jennifer.

It sounds truly life an amazing trip; the lives you touched, the power of God that was dispersed among the villages. Just amazing and powerful. Thank God for what you have done and prayers for a safe trip back; there is supposed to be a ice/snow rain tomorrow night, hopefully you don't get delayed.

So sorry I did not post yesterday. Basketball games and spending the day with Jules. I am so happy to be able to see you tonight. Hope the flight in was relaxing.
