Our Last Clinic Day

On our last day in Villa de San Francisco, we were worried we wouldn’t be able to accommodate the crowds. It was a busy day, and we treated at least 300 patients.
Just before lunch, as were closing the door for a quick break, there was a woman in her 60s trying to get inside. At first, we thought she was trying to sneak in, but she looked bad, was sweaty and said she was having chest pain. Tom took her blood pressure and it was like 218/110. The team gave her an aspirin to chew up, as per hospital protocol, and then gave her a beta blocker.
Then, as she was sitting on the bench, she began to have a seizure. We moved her to the floor, and Tom cradled her head. She had a second seizure a little later. We needed some nitro, an EKG machine, oxygen, and to run blood work, but we had none of those things. We did have a portable pulse oximeter and a glucometer, so we were able to rule out hypoglycemia.
So Dr. Lipinski put a call into Dr. Follman, a cardiologist at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. He answered his phone, and told the team to give her another dose of beta blockers, and he assured us we were doing the right thing. (We made him an honorary 37th member of our mission team)
We had to get her to a hospital, so the woman called someone and they took her to the capital in a pick up truck. It was an absolute first on a mission trip – our first code! (a code STEMI! Cardiac arrest for you lay folks)
We wanted to add an educational aspect to our day, so our dental assistant Gabriela talked to about 50 adults about brushing their teeth. Then she passed out toothbrushes, toothpaste and cups of mouthwash, and children came swarming in. Afterwards, one child ran up to John with his hands full. To express gratitude, he simply laid his head on John’s stomach. Then he ran off to show his mother his special gifts.
The team designated Rudy to be our spokesman for the VIPs who showed up. First, the mayor toured the clinic, and he showed Rudy and Dr. Lipinski his office. “He wanted to officially thank us for coming and said we have an open initiation to come back anytime,” Dr. Lipinski said. “He was very appreciative.”
Near the end of the day, the Chief of Police showed up, with a bodyguard wearing a bulletproof vest, and after she took a look around, she told Rudy it “would be a very good idea” if we left some supplies behind. That wasn’t really a request on her part, but more of a demand. We normally leave the majority of our supplies behind, but we wanted to give most of them to the hospital, so the pharmacy packed a bag for the police that consisted mainly of hemorrhoid cream and laxatives. That’s only slightly an exaggeration!
We left many suitcases for the hospital, most filled with medical gloves, alcohol pads, hand sanitizers, hydrogen peroxide and alcohol. We also left all of our wound care supplies . The team also left a lot of their clothes and shoes. Everyone was extremely happy! Well, maybe not the police.
