(I didn’t have Internet access at all on Thursday, so my posts were delayed! I haven’t even told you about the gunshot wound we saw yet! Stay tuned!)
On Wednesday, we tried something different. We decided not to hold the kids camp. (I know Cristina! Crazy, right?) The first two days, it created quite a mob scene, with children scrambling for toys or our craft projects whenever they could. People started referring to me as Justin Bieber, because of the mob that would follow me. When I’d walk to the bus, I’d have a group of 30 or so standing by waiting for me to come out with goodies.
So, instead, I just sat on a bench in the park and passed out bubbles and yo yos and talked to people, learning their names and teaching the kids English words, and they taught me Spanish. And you know what? The day absolutely flew by. And, when I finally decided to pass out some toys, in small groups, some of the kids held out their hand to shake mine, and they said “thank you.”
Emily speaks fluent Spanish, so she worked as a translator, Geoff worked as a runner for the pharmacy team, and Erika ran triage in the Ob-gyne area. The rest of the team appreciated the extra hands, and everyone felt the calm atmosphere.
Frank and Shawn in the physical rehab area helped many patients and Heidie managed the front door so well that we called her the “triage princess.” Jen passed out about a hundred reader-type glasses, and everyone was so thankful for the gift of sight.
Dr. Wilson headed back to the hospital in the afternoon to perform another procedure, so he trained Holly on how to use the ultrasound machine, and she and Tracy used it for the afternoon so people could see their babies’ heartbeat.
At the end of the day, a woman came up to Mary Jo and said, “I want to thank you for helping my country. It’s not easy to do what you are doing here. We appreciate it very much.”

Thank you so much Julie for carving time out for these amazing blogs! I can only imagine how packed every single second of every day must be. We miss you and I've tried not to overload your team with requests! :-)
We know how very, very blessed we are to have Emily at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital. And now children in Honduras are so very, very blessed to be beneficiaries of her bright smiles, kindness, compassion and laughter. We miss you, Em!!
