I’m Not the Only One

On Tuesday, we were back at the same site in Cantarranas. I’ve got to admit that we were skeptical that we would be busy on day two at the same place. It felt like we had practically seen the whole town already. Jennifer, our host, assured us that word had spread and people would come from far and wide to see us, and they did.

We had double the amount of people waiting for us as we arrived Tuesday, and by the end of the day, we had treated 390 patients (including one outside our hotel). We got set up pretty quickly, now that we know the ropes, and got to work. By 2 p.m., the men from the town showed up, all wearing hats, probably because they just had finished work in the coffee and sugar cane fields.

Dr. Wilson spent the whole day with us, working in an office building across the street from our clinic. When people realized there was another doctor on site, they swarmed the building, wanting to see a physician. But when Amanda told them it was a gynecologist, they scattered quickly, running back to get a spot in line.

A woman who was pregnant with twins had shown up the first day, when Dr. Wilson wasn’t on site, so she came back for an exam. She was due in February but was having contractions, and was excited to have an ultrasound. But no baby yet! (Dr. Wilson has yet to deliver a baby on a mission trip.)

We did notice the lack of men’s involvement with their families. Many of the women who were expecting were left by their husbands or boyfriends. The woman expecting twins had three other kids at home and her husband just left one day, and she was pretty depressed. There were a lot of pregnant teenage girls, who were beaming with happiness at learning the sex of their baby, and young girls carrying around their 18-month-old toddlers.

Dr. Paik was very busy, giving out 30 injections mostly for knee pain (compared to four the first day). One 92-year-old man got injections in both knees, and Dr. Paik told him to take it easy for the next couple of days. The man laughed out loud and told him he was ready to walk back home – a six mile trek up the mountain.

At the end of the night, at our meeting after dinner, Dr. Wilson gave a devotional. As part of it, he told a story about how he loved the John Lennon song “Imagine,” but he didn’t agree with some of the lyrics. You see, in 1994, Dr. Wilson lost his daughter, Lauren Elizabeth, in a tragic car-train crash in Hinsdale. The first line of the song is “Imagine there’s no heaven.” Dr. Wilson simply can’t fathom that idea, so he decided to change the words to “Imagine we’re in heaven.” And then, to our surprise, he sang the song to us.

“Imagine we’re in heaven. It’s easy if you try. Our children will be with us, in that eternal sky. Imagine all the people Living together one day ….” When the final chorus came, the entire group spontaneously sang along with him, many of us in tears. “You, you may say I’m a dreamer, But I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us and the world will be as one.”

“We are continuing the journey toward our heavenly destination where God will greet us and wipe away ever y tear,” Lanny said. “I believe that a world of happiness awaits us there along with God’s family – our family. You may say that I’m a believer, but I’m not the only one.”

Every day when I read your stories, I tear up. You are all truly doing God's work. We are all so honored to have such wonderful people as all of you, in our lives. You bless us all by your work and dedication. Thank you for your wonderful strength and goodness.

Re: I’m Not the Only One

I have always had a love-hate relationship with that song as well. It's a catchy tune and a nice idea on the surface. Can't we all just get along? But at the core of the song is the assumption that if we could but just throw off the pesky constraints of religion and stop arguing about silly things like God, we could all join hands and be happy. The truth, I believe, is that a world without God is a pretty hopeless place, and the world will never "be as one" until we are all redeemed and reconciled to one another by the One who created us.

So I love Dr. Wilson's rendition of the song, and I love his continued faith even in the face of the tragic loss of his child. I am sure there are many in Honduras, too, who long for the day when pain and suffering are ended. Thanks to the AMH team for bringing just a little taste of that heaven to earth by easing their pain, healing their wounds and carrying their burdens. Thank you for doing it all in the name of the Great Physician, who will one day bind up all our wounds with joy.

Kudos to all of you that are on the Mission Trip. I know that there are several employees from ABH on the trip, and we miss you but we understand that you are doing God's work in Honduras, instead of ABH for now. We appreciate all of the work that is being done on God's behalf to the patients that you are seeing. I am sure the stories that you are experiencing and will experience are significant, heart warming, and satisfying.

Warming Hearts Back Home

Yesterday the temperature on my drive in to work was 1 degree. Probably a little warmer in Honduras. By the time I got to work I was warmed by thoughts of the great work you are doing in the mission field. Keep looking for the" God moment!"

P.S. I am also warmed by the fact my office is in the boiler room.

Re: I’m Not the Only One

I love hearing the wonderful and inspiring stories you share with us, we are all truly blessed by what you are doing. I'm in a class called "Mission in Cultural and Religious Context" and one of the things we talked about today was "Election of God's people to bless others". All I could think about (besides the notes I was taking) was the work you are all doing. We are living in a country with all of these medicines and health advances; we are called to help those who are less fortunate. Spiderman's Uncle Ben said it best, "With great power, comes great responsibility" and you all have stepped up and taken that responsibility. God bless you for the work that you are doing, the lives you are reaching, and the ministry of Christ you are spreading.

Ms. Jennifer Hadraba, I want to send you all the pictures of the wonderful snow you are missing up here. The field across my apartment you can't see across during the day or night, windchill is around -2º. I took a friend home from school tonight, had to scrap off 5" of snow from the whole car, drove about 15mph to a town that normally is a 15 minute ride home. I hope you are taking it easy and not injuring yourself further by over exerting your arm. I'm praying for you daily/nightly and miss you lots. Love you <3<3<3

Today at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital we are celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a Day of Spiritual emphasis. How poignant Julie's blog posting is as we come together as one under God. We know God doesn't see us differently; He only sees His children when he looks at us. We are so grateful to our team in Honduras for doing God's work and caring for His children. It is heartbreaking that so many people have such great need. How blessed they are to have the AMH group of healers caring for them. We miss our friends Emily, Heidie, Jill, Julie, John, Dr. Lipinski, Dr. Suchy, Thomas and all of you. His eye was still swollen from his injury yesterday from the basketball practice, but he was just happy that the tooth fairy came. Anna's learning to play a recorder from her music class. Hello and well wishes to our AGH family members and AMH friends. We miss you and you're in our thoughts and prayers. We look so forward to Julie's blog postings each day. Thank you for all of your care and compassion for those in need while you're so far away from home. During today's Days of Spiritual Emphasis event at AGH celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., our guest speaker Chaplain and Priest Fr. Michael Sande talked about how important it is for us to care for one another whether we're right next to each other or a world away, both literally and figuratively. His words made me think of all of you, when he spoke of how planting the seeds of kindness blossoms into peace for all of God's children. :-)

Dear Emily, Dr. Lipinski, Heide, Jill, John, Julie, Shawn and Dr. Suchy,
It is an honor to say I work with you as colleagues in different capacities at AGH; who are now extending the healing ministry of Christ in such a profound way on this mission trip. The lives you help aren't just physically there with you, but also in our hearts back home.
And to all of you on this year's mission trip,
I pray for you and the entire Mission Team. Although this is my first reply on the blog this year, I have been reading Julie's Blogs since the beginning and have felt the spirit of the work you are all doing. Dr. Wilson's version of the song compelled me to write today because I am another dreamer who can imagine an end to suffering and the world being as one.
Thank you all for representing our family.

Keep up the great work and we look forward to seeing you soon. I love the interpretation of this song, I also will grab a new meaning and feeling when I listen to the words. Thank you for that too. It is still very cold here and i figured it out. It didnt get cold until Sunday when you all left. This means that alot of warm hearted people left this area and it began to get cold. Looking at the forecast for next week 39 on Saturday 42 on Sunday and 51 on Monday. You guys will all be back by then, coincidence, I dont think so.

Bought the movie End of Watch going to try and watch it without tearing up this time. But you know I probably will.

We are doing fine Julian has been a big help. Cant wait to see you Sunday night. I will be off Monday so Im all yours. Love you so much hope to hear from you soon.

P.S. Hockey fans Blackhawks are 3-0 and going for 4 in a row tonight. Go Hawks.

Love you babe XOXOXO JUAN

Re: I’m Not the Only One

I heard Dr Wilson sing this rendition and will never sing it the other way again. I am seeing the work of God in every sentence of your blog. Lanny, thanks for inspiring us all from afar too with your faith, love, compassion and joy. Unforgettable. it is so cool to wander the halls (should I say rounding?) and catch people talking about all of you. Whether it is Mary Joe's PACU, residents during rounds, Sue and Sharon's team in OB, medical staff services, for Gary, and all your other departments, the halls are buzzing with love to each of you. Priceless letters from home too. Thanks to all your families for sending you all off with such love. Your dedication is amazing. You are leaving an indelible mark of Jesus on each person you meet there. Thank you!!!

Message for Margaret & Joyce

Hi Mom and Joyce!

We are so proud of you both for traveling all that way and delivering care to all those who need it most. What a unique chance to directly impact the lives of others through giving of yourselves and your talents. I'm sure it's exhausting, and the lines of people seem endless, but don't lose sight of the face of God in those you meet. You are both such an inspiration and excellent role models to your families. We love you both and can't wait to hear all about your adventures!

Re: I’m Not the Only One

Sharon, WE are missing u immensely! it was great to see you on the phone today. THe kids were very happy after talking with you. Kristin came to work with me for half the day. SHe was quite the chatty assistant. THe patients loved her!
Tonight, the kids went to bed early after showers. THey really prayed fervorantly for you and the team tonight. They clearly understand what is happening there in Honduras. They want you to help people know Christ. It showed in their prayers.
By this time in the journey, You might be getting tired, Those are long hard days. I know you wont be enjoying the food! You might even have run out of Granola bars by now. But we are believing in you and urge you to not grow weary in doing good. (It also wouldn't hurt if everyone on the team who still has any PopTarts or Chocolate leftover would please hand them over to Sharon Bowers, Everything will go better!! ) Press on in doing the work of God.

Re: I’m Not the Only One

Hi dear Sharon,
We have Kristin now at our home. All is well. Yesterday she said at the supper table "I miss my
mama", then she threw a kiss up to God and asked God to let you know that she missed you and loves you.
I had been sick 5 days with Bronchitis just before Kristin came here. Perfect time - I got well to take care of her PTL. God knows all our needs. Keep on being a big blessing there as you serve the poor and needy. That's God's heart.

Lots of Love,

Mama & Dad

Re: I’m Not the Only One

I just read all of the comments on this blog so far. There is no doubt that those of you that are in Honduras are not only enjoying your time, but making a difference. it is also evident that your colleagues back here in Suburban Chicago are proud of you and your contribution, and they also miss you. That's truly a definition of teamwork and positive employee engagement. I am grateful for all of you that are reaching out to the people of Honduras, just like you reach out to our patients within AMH hospitals. You make a difference. Now you know why we believe that our customer satisfaction scores are so important. See you back soon.
