A busy first day in Cantarranas

After a quick stop at the Valle de Angeles hospital to pick up supplies, we drove about 45 minutes down the mountainside to the town of Cantarranas. We set up camp in city hall. It’s a large space where the administration offices are upstairs and a community center with an open courtyard is downstairs. The staff provided us with great support, managing the traffic flow and making sure everyone stayed in line for their turn.

When we arrived, there were already about 75 people waiting, and others followed our bus in. The clinical team saw a lot of dehydration, parasites, lice and dermatology issues. The team was thankful for a presentation by Dr. Zahner, a dermatologist, and Dr. Petrak, an infectious disease specialist, before we left. The information has come in handy when diagnosing those interesting rashes.

There also were some very sick babies. Most are suffering from dehydration. One 7-month-old baby seen by Dr. Lipinski had poor color, had vital signs off the charts and was breathing rapidly. Dr. Lipinski suspected sepsis and was so concerned that we paid for the mother to catch a bus (the only mode of transportation) to take her (and back) to a bigger hospital in the capital, Tegucigalpa, about 90 minutes away. They have a pediatric clinic at the hospital. We heard that a doctor’s note gets patients moved up to the front of the line, so Dr. Lipinski wrote out a long diagnosis sheet to take with her.

Rudy was in his element, working the crowd around the pharmacy, handing out Bibles and praying with patients. We were happy that the local Seventh-day Adventist church brought some literature and Bible stories, and the pharmacy team made sure a booklet was in every bag of vitamins and supplies.

The Kid’s Camp ministry team set up shop in the park across the street. It’s a large courtyard with lots of places to sit and some covered pavilions. Erika painted nails all day long, while Geoff applied Christian tattoos that said “Jesus Loves Me” on almost every child. He painted nails too! Emily was able to translate and kept things in order. It was remarkable to watch the kids line up for Emily in order to get a couple of crayons and a page or two from a coloring book. Another surprise – puzzles. We had some simple ones -- about 30 pieces each -- and the kids really enjoyed putting them together. We also passed out about 50 jump ropes and spent some time jumping – anything to wear these kids out!

For lunch, we had cheese and tomato sandwiches from the hospital, along with tangerines and banana bread and some yummy juice. We ate in the park under the watchful eye of the children and the wild dogs that roam around. It was impossible to hand over our lunch – it would have created a mob situation, but after we were done, we did pass out the extra sandwiches to the adults.

We had about seven leftover cups, so we lined the kids up in a row, poured seven cups of juice, and watched them gulp it down. Then, we passed the cups down to the left to next set of kids. We probably gave out 40 cups of juice. They were so cooperative and gave the cups back for the next child. Geoff threw the tangerines out to the crowd “wedding style,” like a bouquet toss. It really breaks your heart to see the hunger. How many of us would line up for a simple cup of juice?

P.S. Pictures coming in the morning.  Internet kinks just got worked out.  Now we're really in business!

Re: A busy first day in Cantarranas

I have been waiting up all night to hear about the first real day out in the field. After the snow that I got dumped on it is so nice to hear about real good being done, and the spreading of Jesus to those in need. I hope we hear later about what happens to that child who was sent off to the hospital, that is going to have to be a strong prayer request. Can't wait to see the pictures of all the work the team is doing, it warms the heart and soul to know that you are able to do this and have paid to be apart of it. May God bless all of you on this continuing mission!!!!

Hugs and love to Ms. Hadraba, ermahgerd mishnry wrk <3 <3 <3

God Bless the doctors ... I know it must be so difficult to see so many in need...

Hopefully the World takes notice and more help can happen for these people... It takes strength and courage to eat when you know others are hungry ...

God has placed you there and it sounds as if you will be doing His work ... Just as he intended...

Keep up your positive spirit and we will continue to pray for each and every one of you from home.

It's a tiny sacrifice ... God be with All of you ... As you do the best you can for the people...

Much Love,

xxxMary:::)))

Julie:
So glad to hear that you have all arrived safely. The kids are so lucky to have you and your team to minister to their needs as well. Having seen all the suitcases and your office packed to the brim with toys and stuff I can only imagine all the smiles and shouts of glee you will receive from those dear children. Give them as many hugs as you can!
Looking forward to reading all your daily blogs. We pray for your safety and that God will use you to extend His healing ministry.

Team,
Oh how I miss not being with you this year!!
Please know that you are at the top of my prayer list every morning. I look forward to reading about the daily adventures of your mission ministry. God is working powerfully through you to touch the lives of so many who are in need of even basic care. I draw strength from the knowledge that you are enjoying wonderful weather, as we struggle with a day that will have a wind chill factor of 0 to -10 ALL DAY!!

Re: A busy first day in Cantarranas

Your experiences are much more interesting than whatever my physics professor is currently rambling about! Sad, too, to see the lack of health and prosperity, especially among babies. Even as the weather is below zero today, I have to remember to be grateful for a warm home, clothes, water, and other necessities that have been handed to me without a second thought. Even as physics is incredibly boring, I'm grateful for the opportunity to attend school in a healthy environment with access to all of the care I could ever need.
I'm keeping the team and the people of Honduras in my prayers, as I pray for other potentially life-saving interventions, whether it be spiritually or medically, everyone on the team has the potential to make a difference in these people's lives. I send my love and respect above all to everyone and keep up the amazing work you are doing for these people. I can't wait to hear more!

Hi dad! Today it was -1 degree and felt like it was -13 degrees, freezing! We just watched a very ugly game played by Iowa who lost to Ohio State by 9. At one point we were down by 17 in the second half and brought it within 4. We collapsed then going 13 of 26 from the free throw line - embarrassing! Mom nicely taped my game for you, but had her finger over the camera when I did my amazing spin move:(

Hey dad! Today my science project was voted best in my class and I got recommended for a special reading exploratory! I hope that the kids like the bracelets i made! Love you! :) :) :) :) <3 <3

We also hope that things are going well for you and the whole group - you are all in our prayers! We miss you so much and can't wait for you to get home!!!

Hi Friends!
It sounds as though you have had a fulfilling day. The people are blessed. You are on my mind constantly thinkiing of the good work you are doing.
There is 12 inches of snow and all schools in Woodridge are closed for the week. .............Once you revive Sharon - please tell her I am kidding!!!!!! That would really send her husband Todd over the edge - wouldn't it Sharon??
Rest tonight and embrace the mystery.
Peace and Blessings,
