Glendale Heights – Adventist GlenOaks Hospital will celebrate 2009 National Nurses Week with a variety of activities, including a “Blessing of the Hands” ceremony by the pastoral care staff Thursday and a “Nurse of the Year” award ceremony Friday.
The celebratory theme is “Adventist GlenOaks Grows Great Nurses.”
Blessing of the Hands is an annual ritual conducted for caregivers by members of the hospital’s pastoral care department.
“Blessing of the Hands serves as an affirmation of the healing power of Christ as expressed through our nurses, doctors and other caregivers,” said John Rapp, regional vice president of ministries and mission at Adventist Midwest Health. “We anoint their hands, the channels through which God’s healing flows, with oil because oil in the Bible represents the healing presence of God and the work of the Holy Spirit.”
Caregivers are given cards that express prayers for compassion, understanding, and strength: “Give to me, Lord, strength for this selfless service and enable me to give hope to those I am called to serve.”
In addition to the Nurse of the Year award, other honors will be bestowed upon nurses across various departments.
Members of the media are invited to cover events at the hospital but should contact Lisa Parro at 630.312.7508 to RSVP. Blessing of the Hands will take place at various times in all areas of the hospital Thursday.
