Glendale Heights – A discharge nurse in the Intensive Care Unit of Adventist GlenOaks Hospital has been named Employee of the Year for 2008.
Biby Thorakkal, 30, of Glendale Heights, has worked in the ICU at the hospital for the past three years. Her sense of compassion for people – not only for patients, but for families and co-workers – make her a true leader.
“Biby delivers care with a warm and loving touch,” said Brinsley Lewis, the hospital’s chief executive officer. “She stands up for what our patients need and has earned the trust and respect of her peers. We are proud to have her on our team.”
Good communication between supervisors and staff allow for a positive team approach, Thorakkal said. “We’re a smaller hospital and with that brings a sense of family,” she said. “My managers and co-workers are very friendly, and we’re all very close. We are a great team.”
Thorakkal was presented with a plaque and a $1,000 check at Adventist Midwest Health’s annual Employee of the Year celebration, held Feb. 4 at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Oak Brook. The next day, she told her supervisor, Monica Koder, that she wanted to use a portion of the money to treat her co-workers to lunch.
“From the get go, Biby was a star,” said Koder. “She has a sense of compassion for everyone she meets. She communicates well with everyone and works to make our unit the very best. She epitomizes the word ‘team.’”
