Hinsdale – A community event and mammogram giveaway are among the programs planned by Adventist Hinsdale Hospital to commemorate October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
To kick off the month, the community is invited to a tree-lighting ceremony. The free event will take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 1 in the lobby of Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, 120 N. Oak St.
Speakers include Dr. Patricia Madej, a medical oncologist and medical director of Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s nationally accredited Breast Care Center, Christine Van De Wege, executive director of oncology services at Adventist Midwest Health, and Susan King, executive director of Hinsdale Hospital Foundation.
Winners of the hospital’s Pink Art contest will be announced. Some of the art will be available for purchase in a silent auction. Note cards, flip flops, bracelets and other breast cancer-themed items also will be for sale. Proceeds will benefit the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation’s Open Arms Fund. The fund supports breast cancer patients and their families by helping them navigate the difficult journey through cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
On Oct. 4, women who can’t afford to pay for screening mammograms will have the opportunity to obtain this life-saving test at the hospital’s Hinsdale Imaging Center. Dubbed the “40 for 40” event, mammograms will be provided for 40 women over age 40. The event is funded by the Open Arms Fund.
“Early detection of breast cancer through mammography is so important because it allows us to find cancer that wouldn’t be apparent from a physical exam and treat it before it has a chance to grow or spread,” Madej said.
One in eight women in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer each year. It is the most common non-skin cancer in women, and the second deadliest.
