AHH nurses shine at regional nursing conference

Hinsdale, IL – Three Adventist Hinsdale Hospital nurses recently made two poster presentations at the AACN Midwest Critical Care Conference, held in March at the Marriot Lincolnshire Resort. Clinical Nurse Specialists Mary Meyer, RN, MS and Barbara Stettner, RN, MSN, APN, CCNS, Denise Blackburn, RN, BSN, BSA, clinical coordinator, PICC Services, and Maria Seeley, RN, CRNI, presented to more than 400 nurses.

Meyer, Stettner, and Blackburn’s presentation, “A Watchful Eye” focused on a nursing peer review process that has been in place at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital for four years. The non-punitive nursing process monitors aggregate trends and improves processes and practice.

“Being able to present this important information to my peers was a wonderful opportunity,” said Meyer.

Seeley presented a poster highlighting a prediction tool for thrombi associated with peripherally inserted central catheters recently developed by PICC services at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.

"We were given an opportunity to improve the care delivered to our patients by putting into practice the information learned through this research project. There are numerous institutions now using this tool and we look forward to the follow-up study,” said Seeley.

A peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) is a form of intravenous access that can be used for a prolonged period of time for such things as chemotherapy regimens, extended antibiotic therapy, or total parenteral nutrition. PICC is an asset to both patients and nurses as it protects patient’s veins from medications that can be caustic and gives nurses long term venous access for patient’s comfort and safety.

The presentations contained key facets of the program, challenges and successes associated with peripherally inserted central catheters and formats used to study cases.
