Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital to hold blood drive

La Grange – At any given moment, someone is in need of blood.  Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital is inviting the community to roll up its collective sleeve and give during a blood drive next week.

The blood drive is set for 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Classrooms A, B and C in the lower level of Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, 5101 S. Willow Springs Road.

Hospital officials estimate a patient somewhere needs blood every minute.  Everyone from chemotherapy patients, to accident victims to organ recipients – even someone undergoing an elective procedure – needs access to this life-sustaining fluid.  Julie Chin Bloom, blood donor recruiter, said donors are selfless individuals who never know the person their gift benefits.

“But make no mistake, that gift is truly precious and appreciated,” she said.  “Being a donor is a way to really help others in great need.”

Doctors use the four components of blood – red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma – to stabilize and heal patients.  Red blood cells carry oxygen, while white blood cells fight disease and infections.  Plasma is a nutrient-carrying fluid and platelets help stop bleeding with their ability to form clots.

Quantities are in constant short supply and the American Red Cross estimates just 3 percent of Americans donate blood.  And yet it is easy to do so.

Donors must have photo ID, weigh at least 110 lbs, and have no cold/flu symptoms.  Donors must not have had a tattoo or piercing for one year prior to the blood drive, nor should they have traveled to any malaria area within a year.

Medications do not automatically disqualify a potential donor, as many are acceptable, hospital organizers said.  If you have any questions about your eligibility to donate blood, please call the Blood Center at 630-856-7840.

All donors will receive a free gift. To make an appointment, contact Bloom at 630-856-7837 or julie.bloom@ahss.org.
