Adventist La Grange Memorial employee celebrates 45 years

Media contact: Lisa Parro, senior public relations specialist, Adventist Midwest Health, Lisa.parro@ahss.org

La Grange – Once a week when they have the same shift, Bettye Griffin picks up her fellow dietary employee Willie Harris and the two pray together upon arriving at work at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. There, in the parking lot, the old friends seek divine guidance for world leaders, hospital administration, their own friends and families and the patients being treated in the hospital.

“We pray for the patients, that they would be healed, and we pray for their families, that God would encourage them to stick by their side and do what they can for them,” Griffin said.

Both Argo residents were honored for 45 years of service to the hospital. Harris was recognized in 2009 and Griffin was recognized earlier this year. Griffin, 63, has worked as a dietary aide since graduating from high school in 1964. She assembles salads and cold sandwiches for the cafeteria, café and physician lounges and prepares Jell-O, cobbler and other treats for the next day’s menu. The pair also work in the kitchen at their church, St. Matthew AME in Argo.

When asked to reveal the secret to remaining employed at the same organization for so long, Griffin pointed to several factors.

“You have to enjoy what you do and you have to like the people you work for and those you work with,” Griffin said. “It helps to look at it as ministry.”

Griffin recently reduced her hours from full-time to part-time; however, her quality of work has not diminished.

“I can see myself doing this as long as the Lord gives me strength,” she said.

Rick Wright, the hospital’s chief executive officer, praised Griffin for her many years of service.

“I applaud Bettye for her dedication to our organization, where she has touched literally thousands of lives,” Wright said. “We are blessed and truly thankful for her gift of service.”

More than 350 employees were recognized for dedicating 10 or more years of service to Adventist Midwest Health. Employees received gifts and were recognized at the organization’s annual service awards dinner, held April 15 at the Doubletree Esplanade Lakes in Downers Grove.
