Glendale Heights – Raising children in today’s world is often challenging, but when these young people are also battling emotional health issues or behavior disorders, parents may feel the task is downright impossible.

That’s where Adventist GlenOaks Therapeutic Day School can help. It offers monthly support groups for parents of children and young adults with social and emotional needs. The support group is open to parents in the community, not just those with children enrolled at the school.

“When parents run into problems at home, they’re often confused on how to respond,” said John Flannery, licensed professional counselor and clinical program manager of Adventist GlenOaks Therapeutic Day School’s south campus. “We tailor the sessions to address what’s on their minds.”

Mental health professionals with more than six decades of combined experience have designed these group sessions to help parents cope with their children’s puzzling behavior in healthy and constructive ways. Coping with these children can be difficult for parents on many levels, but studies have shown interacting with parents with similar experiences can be informative and reassuring.

The parent support groups also reinforce topics learned at the “Crisis Prevention Training for Parents and Caregivers,” which Flannery co-conducts each semester with Dr. John Glennon, licensed clinical psychologist and clinical director of the Adventist GlenOaks Therapeutic Day Schools.

Support group sessions are from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 4 and May 2 at the Adventist GlenOaks Therapeutic Day School, 135 North Brandon Drive, Glendale Heights. For more information call 630-671-0383.
