Glendale Heights – Adventist GlenOaks Hospital never closes. But at some point every night, some employees who arrived at 8 a.m. shut down their computers, flip off their office lights and head home.
That’s when Maureen Niketopoulos clocks in.
Niketopoulos is the hospital’s house director and winner of the 2012 Adventist GlenOaks Hospital Employee of the Year award. As the house director, she literally “directs the house,” during off hours with the house being the hospital. Niketopoulos has no set schedule, except to say, she doesn’t work 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Instead she works any day of the week from either 3 to 11 p.m. or 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
During her shift, Niketopoulos goes from unit to unit to check in with nurses and doctors. She’ll also make staffing decisions for the next day based on the number of patients in the hospital. Niketopoulos does this all behind the scenes so that Adventist GlenOaks Hospital patients have the best possible experience.
“When leaders go home for the day, they are confident leaving their departments in Maureen’s hands,” said Bruce C. Christian, chief executive officer of Adventist GlenOaks Hospital. “When they return to work, they often find Maureen not only helped their staff through the night but also solved any issue. She is always calm and in charge.”
A certified nurse, Niketopoulos has worked for Adventist GlenOaks Hospital for four years. Besides being a home health nurse and an emergency room nurse, Niketopoulos has also worked with ambulance and emergency service providers for 10 years. In her role as house director, she says her role is to now “take care of people who take care of our patients.”
“I know what nurses are going through because I’ve been there,” Niketopoulos said. “Being a good leader is simple. It’s about recognizing your colleagues and being a champion for your team. I pat people on the back when they deserve it and I help people out when they’re having a tough time.”
Niketopoulos lives in West Chicago with her husband and has three grown children. She was recognized at Adventist Midwest Health’s annual Employee of the Year celebration, held in February, and received a plaque and a $1,000 check.
